New guy here, and my first question.

Wanna start off by sayin hello to everyone, I just recently purchased a 2004 g35 with a stillen supercharger with 61k miles and i gotta say this is one the the best vehicles ive ever purchased. I had just a couple questions if i could get some help that would be fantastic because i know nothing about these cars as far tech support.

I have looked in threads and used the search button and havent found anything relevant to my issue.

When i bought the car I noticed the stock alloy wheels had black stuff on them, i used my finger to see if it rubbed off and it didnt so i figured some wheel cleaner, purple power or something of that sort would do the trick so i didnt make a big deal about it, I assumed it was old brake dust or something like that because the rest of the car is in Immaculate condition...It even still smells like a new car.

I tried using simple green, wheel cleaner, purple power and nothing was working. I used a little bit of goo gone and it actually removed the coating on the alloy wheel.... I wanted to paint these wheels black anyway so i was quite excited when i noticed that at some point someone must of used some sort of chemical that stripped the coating but only in some spots... I started to do this by hand with a rag and its taking forever... So i was wondering if it would be safe to use acetone or some sort of paint thinner that would strip the coating off, but not the black thats underneath... Im not sure if the black is paint or what but its glossy and the goo gone isnt taking that off... If i take off the wheels from the car and tape off the tires could i brush something on the wheels and just let it sit and hose it down so it strips off the coating?

I dont really wanna rattle can them with ANY type of paint because i dont want the clear coat or paint to chip or anything through time.So any help would be great.

My second issue....
I am giving the car a little tune up, changing oil, radiator flush, plugs etc........I checked the transmission fluid, and the dipstick is dry...but the car shifts 100% fine. No lag, no slipping or anything. Whats the deal with that?

welcome! Nice to see another G owner in Charlotte! Anyway, post a pic of your wheels and maybe someone could chime in. If your going to paint the wheels(I'm guessing OEM rims) then you could just sand that crap off.

Take your rims to get powdercoated. They will strip it down and make it nice and pretty for you. Last a lot longer and look way better

Hi there

You can always try a little wd-40 to remove the black stuff from your rims. I wouldnt let any material sit due to the fact that you may damage the coating on the wheel. I would play it safe and let a wheel repair shop attempt to remove the residue for you. They are fairly cheap services.

As for your vehicle is it a 5at or 6mt?

ouch I don't think that can be cleaned. Looks like it's under the paint. Go talk with Cin Motorsports in Charlotte and they will hook you up. My car is there right now getting a facelift. They are great and honest people and will tell you exactly what you need to do. Goodluck

I want to take off the silver and leave the black undercoating.

Its pretty beat the way it is now. If you put a little work in it you can do it yourself. Sand then wet sand with a high grit. Primper, spray paint, clear coat

Ive done it before for a lot of my friends and it actually is really decent and lasts for quite a while. Great weekend project

Cin will do it for $75 per wheel. It's paint but apparently very good and doesn't peel like spray can paint. I'm debating to do this route too bc I just painted mine and they don't look that great bc the clear coat didn't come out too good.

do not sand your wheels!! just use paint remover, clean the wheels with brake cleaner/wheel cleaner and use the 3m scuff pads
