no experience with jacking the G, need help

I apologize ahead of time for being such a newbie in this area but I did a search (which helped out alot) and I still wasn't able to fully understand what I need to safely jack up the G. At this point I am prepared to buy a 3-4 ton low profile jack from harbor freight and jack stands. Do I need anything else? Are there better quality floor jacks or jack stands that I should consider? Where I get lost is when it comes to getting jack stands with the appropriate adapters. Are there adapters that I can buy and not have to hand make or modify? Also, does the floor jack require an adapter?
I checked the DIY thread but the links to the pictures aren't working for me. Thanks in advance for any input.

A Hydraulic Jack is definitely useful... I got a Craftsman 3 Ton Hydraulic Jack, and two 3 Ton Jack Stand along with it. (<$100) The adapter that comes with the jacks usually are the circular types and NOT flat.

You can by a rubber, Square block adaptor to go with it... The adaptor on mine just slides right out.

But to be honest, the Jack points on our G's are so weak, that it's bound to get mangled and distorted over time (I have aftermarket/winter setups). Mine are already pretty messed up, but who cares!! It's on the bottom of the car. I would just go with the normal hydraulic jack and screw the adaptor cause your just wasting more money for something on the bottom of your car.

Good luck.

I made my own adapter blocks out of hardwood.

I cut a slot for the jack point & glued on some rubber.
Works great, I've jacked my car maaaaaany times.
The jack points on the car are still like new.

If you lift from the front crossmember, all you need is a thin block of wood on top of the jack adapter, that way you don't have to worry about mangling the lower door sills. I would suggest driving the front wheels up on a couple of 2x4's to get extra clearance, and then putting jack under the front crossmember (the little 'O' right in the middle of the front suspension. Use that block of wood in between the adapter and the 'O'.

As for the rear, just put the jack under the diff pumpkin and you'll be fine. Any jackstands rated to the right weight should be fine, just place them under the frame rails (squarish looking rails inboard from the door sills) and not the door sills and you won't cause any mangling at all.

I have the craftsman low profile jack, and I used it to change out my summer to winter set up.....
I had made a block of oak with a groove to lift the car from the stock jack points, but unfortunately the wood split because the floorpan of the car is not even, meaning only one side of the pc of wood was making contact......

Since that idea went out the window, I just jacked up from the front member right behind the front wheel well, and I lifted the entire rear in one shot by going center on the rear housing....
Heres a pic of the jack, and the position I jacked the front from

jesus man, just jack the car up, use whatever jack on the appropriate jack points......not to sound harsh but as long as you use the lift points and the car has the e-brake on and is secured in place, just jack the thing up

go office christmas parties at bars....for 4 hours

"not to sound harsh..." but great advice... So how do you just jack up the car on the appropriate jack points, then get the jack stands onto the SAME appropriate jack points? Unless you use the Pumpkin (rear differential) and the proper place on the front/center of the vehicle to jack it up, you will not be able to use the jack stands. This means you'll be under your vehicle relying on a cheap set of hydraulics to keep you alive. I think it was a good and valid question.

Martin, If you go to any SEARS, in the Hardware dept, you will see the jack. They have two (2) versions, the one I purchased $120, and they have a 2 ton jack for $199.

The only reason I bought the jack is I had collected all these bonus coupons for using my Sears Card.....

Check here
Here Also
They seem to be the same quality, but I didn't figure the total cost with shipping....the Sears may come out to the same final cost.....choice is yours....

Martin,

Check out Harbor Freight. They have lightweight, racing, 3000 lb. jacks (annodized aluminum in various colors) for about the same price. My buddie has one and you can jack his Audi Avant up in 2 pumps.

Make sure to click on "Free: Receive Discounts, Coupons, Specials". You'll frequently see this jack for about $100.00 (with the discounts) instead of $129.00.
