was thinking about getting a e60 m5 till

I googled e60 m5 reliability and the first things i read were

Unreliable? Oh YES. Get ready to know your service adviser very well, be nice even though

I took mine on a 1700 mile trip this summer (averaged about 90 mph on the interstate) and had absolutely no issues at all except for burning a quart of oil and having to fill up every couple of hours.

(talking about the service advisor) Ability to look you in the face and say, "Wow, this is the first time we are seeing this".

I think the bottom line is the reliability issue.

Mines had the Battery Drain Sensor system replace (the sensor was actually draining the battery). The biggie was the SMG Failure which resulted in the SMG Hydraulic system being replaced (embarassing breakdown) & a stress fracture in the windscreen which is being replaced & i've just had a call to say they fitted the wrong screen yesterday so have to replace again today.

I would never own another M5 & perhaps never own another BMW after these episodes

so it looks like il be keeping my G for another 3 yrs
