Not For The Faint Of Heart, Wet Sanding
Hey guys,
Picked my car up today from a local body shop who has done quality work for me in the past.
One of my only complaints with my G35 Coupe is the orange peel in the paint. I feel Nissan puts an average quality paint job on there top of the line cars ( Infiniti ).
I almost purchased a black one but the orange peel turned me off. I had even put a deposit down on one and then went and looked at 3 in my area, all of which had excessive orange peel. (black really shows orange peel) Had my dealer move my deposit to a brilliant silver. (both were black interior, sport, aero, premium) Got my brilliant silver car about a month ago. Yesterday I took it to my body shop and had them wet sand the entire car and go through several steps of finishing the surface(clear coat). This thing is sooooo smooooth now. Before the refinishing you could not see detail in the reflection on the side, nor good color. Now you can see all colors and so to speak a much sharper image. Kind of like having a really grainy picture, and then taking the same picture with a high quality camera and the image is much clearer/sharper. This only cost me $225.00 and took them all day. Pictures are soon to follow. Now I am going to look into the crystal finish. I have a 22 year old employee who ran his hands across it and went wow. This is not for everyone, especially the Faint of Heart, but it sure was worth it.
Would only recommend someone you absolutely can trust with your vehicle. They could have done more, but we played it a little conservative.

Yes, that is an excellent way to make sure you have a mirror finish, Its about the only way to smooth out the "orange peel" in the paint proces.
I am glad to see it turned out well, I have wet sanded a few cars and that is by far the best remedy for a rough paint job.

Alan -
please take a picture of your car, as mine is also a BS and I think it is super smooth after about 15 coats of carnuba. Is your paint less protected now ?

Ok, this might be a stupid question, but can someone explain what "orange peel" is?

the paint has an orange peel look to it, it is from layering on paint and clear coat. look at your car from an angle (easier to see on darker cars) it has sorta of a orange skin look. i notice it on my DG in artificial light like in a parking garage.

so it's not actually orange... it just has that blurry, bumpy kinda consistency when you look at it..

exactly. the paint has the look of an an orange peel.
I haven't looked at the new 996 porsches, but the old 911 and 993 porsches had some of the best factory paint jobs I have seen. little to no orange peel.
Almost all asian and americans cars have a fair amount of orange peel to the finish. Come to think of it, mercedes and BMW aren't so great either.
Porshce is probably th e largest manufacturer that has GREAT paint jobs. of course, small manufacturers like ferrari have been known, for decades, to have perfect paint jobs

Hi,
Paint is not less protected, but the clear coat will be a little thinner. They put a lot of clear on cars now anyway. If you want to see some pretty nice finishes, look at the 929 and 626 Mazda's. They spray a lot of clear on them and rotate the car to keep the clear coat from running. This also helps with orange peel. Good old gravity helps creat orange peel also. Infiniti is suppose to rotate some of its cars, but it appears they do not do it on the G35 Coupe. Raining today, (because I got my car done yesterday). Will take pictures when detailed again. New state tag also on the way, it says G35. Surprised no one beat me too it.
