If I was young and it was my first car I'd get the GTI just because it is newer and less likely to have any issues. I'm guessing the VW also gets better mileage. It is probably more practical too. I do not know its performance stats but I've seen them at the track.
If they had comparable miles on them or where the same year, G all the way.
For myself, I wouldn't even look at either one of those cars. They're both automatics. I don't like automatics. Don't like the automatic in my wife's G35x. If I needed the luxury of an automatic I'd spend my money on something cush and luxurious rather than something sporty with an AT.

I love this post because I have owned both of these cars
If you're looking for an automatic, and you're abolustely set on buying one of those cars, I would purchase the G35. The G looks great, and is very comfortable regardless of the transmission.
The GTI is relatively light and revy, and the appeal in driving that car really came from the 6-spd tranny.

I think it is high for anywhere. I bought my 06 6MT with 74K miles for $17k and I live in the SE. I'd say that car is worth maybe $12k.
It pays to scan AutoTrader out to about 300 miles to see what prices are like around you.
