Regardless, no one is going to change anyone else's mind on this one. But for the sake of science I'll continue to ride with my hand on the shifter, as I have done with every vehicle I've owned for 30 years (all direct linkage, RWD/4WD), and I'll get back to you when something breaks. (It would be just my luck that it would!).
couldn't agree more .. I've owned PLENTY of cars and it's just natural for my to keep my hand on the shifter .. obviously I don't apply pressure so I don't see the issue with it .. and, if something were to break, I'd just get a new transmission under warranty anyways so I really couldn't give two sh*ts .. I've never seen anyone (anyone I know) drive their manual car with two hands on the wheel lol .. doesn't feel like a sporty way to "enjoy" your car and I live in an area where I have to shift a lot and I'm surrounded by bad drivers so it just makes sense to always be ready .. maybe if I lived in the country things would be different but NY/NJ drivers are a different animal lol

Right. And the thing is the shifter has to be within comfortable arms reach. Because of that, it makes it a natural area to rest your hand. Therefore, drivers are naturally going to rest their hand on it. Any decent car designer/engineer knows that and designs the linkages accordingly. He can't take into account every ham fisted heavy handed dufus that is going to grind the thing but he can, and does, design it so that a hand resting on it won't tear up the tranny. Just common sense.

As for the Vibrations, I've owned Audi A4 quattro (5 speed) and VW golf(5 speed) , the vibrations on those are negligible compared to the G....... but i'm not sure if they were direct linkage or rod ........ I drive with my hand on the stick, unless i've my gf in the car, when i mostly grab smthng else .......lol

Mine does that too, I'd assume its because in a RWD car the shifter goes right into the trans, there are no shift cables like in a FWD car so the vibrations get passed right to the shifter in our cars.

On some vehicles, the Owner's manual does state the following...

This is from the STI manual..

However, on the G, our shift lever is spring loaded. So it 'should' absorb some of the weight / pressure when we rest out hand on it.

The reason why it's bad on some vehicles is because there is a slight gap between each gears and shifter rails which allows lubricants to flow though to prevent the gear and rail from direct contact. So resting one's hand on those car can cause premature wear.

I need to stop resting my foot on the clutch pedal though. It's a bad habit.

Of course many owner's manuals also tell you not to drink gasoline or put the lug nuts in your ear.
