Advice on buying a used coupe

How ya doing guys, I'm looking for a little bit of advice here. I'm 20 years old (sophomore in college) and am looking for my second car. I'm currently driving a '99 Honda Accord, but that's being passed on to a family member, so I've started searching for something new. I have my eye set on a G35 coupe, but I have a few questions first, and would be appreciative of any of your opinions.

Basically, I'd like to spend ~$10,000 on the car. I know that at this price I'm going to be looking at a fairly high mileaged coupe. So my question is, would you guys say it is a poor decision to buy one with around 100,000-120,000 miles on it? I've been doing research and I know the reliability is supposed to be pretty good aside from regular maintenance, but everyone's opinion seems to be different. I'm looking to keep the car for 4-5 years, perhaps longer depending on how much I spend.

What's the highest mileage G35 that you guys would recommend buying? Would you say it's worth it to spend a few extra grand to go for a something with less miles on it? I know all cars are different and there are many factors (maintenance history, previous driver's driving tendencies, etc), but I'm just asking in general here.

Any kind of advice or opinions, or recommendations of another direction that I should go in would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

EDIT:

Budget has changed a little bit. Now looking to spend around $15,000. I want to ask a neutral party here because I think I'm a little biased in that I want a "newer" car, but my question is:

Would you guys look for an 03-04 coupe with 40-50k miles, or an 05-06 with ~70k miles?

I'd like to grab an '06 because of the rev-up, projectors, memory seats, Bluetooth, etc, but I just wanted to hear some opinions as to if you guys would recommend going for a older year with less mileage.

Thanks a lot.

for me i would spend a lot for low miles. That's just me. I can never buy a car near or over 100k miles. If you can try to get a new G. It would be better for you. But if you only going to keep it for 4-5 years depending, then just get an 03 and have some fun with it.

Personally I spent a few more thousand than I was looking at originally for my car. I wouldn't necessarily hesitate to buy one with close to 100k if the maintenance was kept up but I get weird about owning a car with 100k on it so I got one with 62k on it and spend the extra money and also got one a year newer than I wanted as well.

I would also sepnd a little more to get a car with less miles. However, with the issues that pop up around 70-80K; wheel bearings, compression rod/LCA bushings, axle click, differential bushing, etc. if you could find one around $10K that has already had a lot of that stuff fixed I wouldn't argue that decision. I looked down and saw this yesterday.

Save your $$ wait until you can afford the latest model with the lowest mileage. Yes you'll see members here with high mileage rides but they have been meticulously taken care of, you won't find those cars on a lot or dealership.

You'll have to forgive me here as my knowledge of the internals of a car is limited, but are those things that can be fixed by oneself? I don't have much of any experience working on a car but I'd say I'm pretty mechanically inclined (studying mechanical engineering at the moment). So if they aren't out of this world difficult, I don't think I'd have a problem doing it myself. Also, any idea of roughly how much the parts are to fix those issues?

As much as I would love to wait to purchase the car, I kind of have to make a decision within the next 6 months. Right now I can pretty comfortably spend $10k, but $12k would be pushing it. I'm considering borrowing the extra money, but thinking rationally, I'm just not sure if it makes sense to do so, considering I could get a much cheaper car for under $10k that would get me from point A to point B.

Skip the G and pick up a low mileage vehicle that will get you from point A to B. Do you own a shop press to work on bushings or impact gun. What happens when valve covers leak n you need new covers along with labor. Are you going to maintain the vehicle or just drive. Skip the G and get a KIA soul...I heard they are making wicked bodykits that won't fit right.

Hit the market place on the forum, there's plenty of deals to be found there. I have seen a few G's in similar condition that I bought my '06 selling for a lot cheaper. I picked up my base sedan with 37,xxx miles for $18k in summer of 2010, financed only $12k. I only looked for about 1 month before I settled on that one. I don't need all the bells and whistles hat come with the premium package since I am swapping stuff out like the stereo, wheels, suspension, brakes, and adding a lip kit. I took into consideration how much longer the OEM parts would last before I needed to replace, to make myself a cushion and replace with better supermarket/OEM setup. My w

If all you're concerned about is getting from point A to point B why even consider a G35? Stick with commuter cars like Honda's and Kia's where maintenance and tires are cheap. You won't have any fun and you'll be bored but you'll get to your destination...

I have been looking at the market place on the forum, but I haven't found anything in my area that's around my price range. I do plan to keep an eye on it, though.

As far as looking at one with a salvage title, I've read that it's generally a wise decision to stay away from those. Probably not going to pursue one of those right now.

Getting from point A to point B is definitely not all I'm looking for. I want something that's fun to drive, something I will be able to enjoy, which is why the G35 caught my eye. Just not sure if it's a rational decision to get one given my price range right now.

Do it now or you'll wake up one morning like me and say, what is the coolest family car I can get for half the price of the e90 M3...If you want a coupe...get it now. Carpe diem.

By the time you are most of the guys' age on this forum, you''ll be looking a choices like the G1.8 hybrid or the Infiniti Green-treehugger-protect the horned owl mobile. Luckily, you'll be given one for free by the US Socialist Republic for your years of service at the Soylent Green Veteran processing plant.

Do it now!!!

I bought 03 6mt coupe 3 years ago an it had 45k on it. I paid 17k for it. I am the 3rd owner an I have all the carfax. I would just be careful buying used, but I am happy with my car. An I personally like the g35 over the g37, but that's just me.
