Would you guys look for an 03-04 coupe with 40-50k miles, or an 05-06 with ~70k miles?

I'd like to grab an '06 because of the rev-up, projectors, memory seats, Bluetooth, etc, but I just wanted to hear some opinions as to if you guys would recommend going for a older year with less mileage.
I have a 03 g35 turbocharged 6mt with 63k clean title $16,500

2003 G35 coupe

Hello, I live in South Florida and I am looking to buy a 2003 Infiniti G35 coupe black, automatic premium package he is the second owner it has 63k miles black rims blacked out taillights and touch screen dash. He has all maintaence records and has no problems he says, only selling to buy the G37. He is asking $12k but I told him $11k cash and he will take it. Sound like a good deal? If taken care of properly this car should run for a while right? Over 140k miles? Thanks!

you should be able to get a decent G for that price now. I personally always go with lower miles and definitely get it checked out whether at a Infiniti mechanic or a shop you trust.

In 7/09 I bought my 03 6MT G with 32k miles for $15k. Never had an issue with it (other than some worn out bushings). unfortunately I was hit and run and the car was totaled in oct....

Good luck! they're great cars

I recently bought a 06 with 67k for 17k.. but that is with all records and extended warranty still in tact. Patience is key. 6 months is plenty of time to look. Don't make the mistake of wanting to buy the car more than the seller wants to sell it.

I kind of did that as well, but as I still look on CL and on the forums, I haven't seen a car that matched my criteria for that price. So I'm still happy with my purchase. As for the 03-05 or 06-07.. I would get the later models just because it fixed some of the earlier problems like the brake problem and some of the oil consumption. Good luck on your search.

Ill be completely honest, I was in your position 3 years ago (recently graduated) and I was going between a used G35 coupe and something reliable like an accord or something. I had my typical "I want a sick car and I want it now" mentality and I ended up getting a 04' coupe with like 53K mi for around 15K. In hindsight, it was pretty dumb to be honest. In college you barely have enough money to buy good alcohol let alone repair something on your car if it breaks (both my window motors went out and the dealer wanted like $500 a pop). Although nothing serious ever broke or wore out, any repair on this car wont be cheap unless you get super crafty. Also in college, unless you are super lucky, most likely your car will be on the street and will get messed up from some drunk idiot at some point in time. As much as I really wanted that car and enjoyed it while I had it, I look back on it now thinking I shouldnt have gotten it. At the ~15K price point you will get something with high miles or something with damage that nobody wants to tell you about. Always take the potential car you are buying to a mechanic you trust to get it inspected. When your dealing with luxury used cars, somebody selling you something at a cheaper price usually isnt because he is just trying to be nice. At the end of the day save you money and get one when you graduate. I didnt do it, but I wish I did.

Besides, cars dont get you laid in college anyway! You can probably sack up and drive something a little crappier for the time being and get something sick when your done with school.

Note: i ended up selling mine when I graduated and recently got a newer one with less miles that I can afford to maintain and can keep clean.

Just my $.02, and I didnt want to come here and sound like a mother, but considering I went through the exact same thing that you did, I figured I would chime in.

Yup, not looking to jump into anything right now. I've been checking CL/autotrader/cars.com and have doing research for the last few months so I'm not going to just spring for the first thing I see. I realize this is a large investment so I plan to make sure it's the right one before I make a purchase. Thanks a lot for the input, I appreciate it.

Even though it may not have been exactly what I wanted to hear, I do value your opinion.

I realize $15k is a large chunk of change to be spending on a car right now, but I have a decent amount of cash saved away and have put myself in a position where I can pay upfront for the car and won't be having to pay monthly payments on it. I understand gas and insurance cost money as well, but I have a small source of income here at school which should be able to sustain those costs just fine. I have factored the cost of repairs into my decision, and have made sure to leave money in my bank account for if/when the car needs to be repaired.

I hear ya that buying a G35 may not be the "smartest" decision to make, but I want to enjoy driving whatever car I choose to decide on. I don't want to look back and say "Wow I really wish I would've gotten that G35 instead of _____". Not to be cliche, but as someone said earlier, you only live once, and a G35 is something I have a strong interest in. I understand that you gotta pay to play, and that these vehicles aren't cheap to buy and maintain, and although I haven't made my decision completely yet, I think I'm willing to do that.

But don't get me wrong, I'm not some narrow minded college kid who only wants this car to be cool. I've put a lot of thought into the cost of the car and whether I can really afford to maintain it or not, but by no means have I made my decision yet.

I really do appreciate the input, and please don't think that I'm throwing your opinion out the window. As someone who's gone through a very similar process, I put a lot of value into what you said above, so thanks again for chiming in.

To anyone else: any and all opinions are more than welcome and would be greatly appreciated.

Good for you man factoring in all the other expenses and such. I wasnt trying to say you were naive or anything just trying to give the opposing view.

Lastly Ill just conclude with the fact that yeah life is short so enjoy it but a couple years wont make a big difference.

I graduated from college at the age of 20 and bought my 07 G Coupe with 30k miles for $25k out the door. I put about $5k down and my monthly payments are around $300 excluding insurance. I recently turned 22 and do not regret buying the G whatsoever.

I was able to afford this due to having a stable job out of college. I could have probably gotten a more expensive car but knew my budget. If you can budget all the costs of buying and maintaining the G COMFORTABLY then you should go for it. However, I would not advise buying an older model with such high mileage. Try to save up and get one with lower miles which will in turn give you less headache in the future (hopefully). You should be focusing on your education rather than repairs on an old car. Also keep resale value in mind if you don't plan on keeping the car till it dies.

GL with whichever car you go with!

Note: I'm probably gonna end up trading the coupe in for some sort of sedan because I just got married and bought a house
