Car stuck in park!
Car stuck in park!
hey guys so today for some weird reason i cant even turn my car on because it wont even pass the Lock position on the ignition. and the car is stuck on park... so i cant drive it at all! anyone know how to fix this! i can hear the clicks when i try to turn the ignition but it wont budge its just really stiff and wont pass the lock position ive tried poking at the shift lock thing but nothing so far.. any suggestions? Thanks!
Buy a 6MT?
hehe.. J/K. I assume you tried taking the key out, rotating it 180 degrees and putting it that way? My Tacoma ignition sometimes won't turn unless I do that.
You might want to try spraying a little white lithium grease on your key and putting it in and out of the ignition a few times. Don't put a ton on it though.. just enough to loosen up the moving parts inside there. This does wonders for the keyhole on doors in your house, car, etc.

Out cars have what is called a shift lock solenoid. It is an electromechanical switch that stops the driver from shifting out of park.
Sometimes the shift lock solenoid goes bad and more frequently the control board for the shift lock solenoid goes bad. There is a diagnostic procedure in the service manual that will help you isolate the bad circuit. I was able to do it with a voltmeter. The control board cost me ~$70 (granted this was on a Murano but I am guessing things are similar) and it took 10 minutes to change out.
The good news is you have a shift lock override switch. By your gear selector there will be a little plastic cap. Pry it out and then stick something small down the hole - it will move a lever that disengages the shift lock and you will be able to shift into gear.

When it happened to me I kept trying to push on the cap not knowing it was a cap and it wouldn't budge. Unless your shift mechanism is broken or the linkage to the transmission is jammed, I can't think of a reason why it would be stuck. If either of those conditions were the case, it would probably feel loose and sloppy vs just stuck in park.
