6MT in Traffic

Anyone have a 6MT and drive in traffic frequently? If so, is it difficult and how's the clutch?

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I love my car soo much man. But I loath driving it in traffic. I have driven stick off and on for years but my last car was an automatic. I think it made me lazy. I can tell you though stop and go traffic with the Coupe heavy duty clutch and lot's of torque ain't no fun. In my opinion driving a manual 4 cyl. is easier in traffic. I also drove a G35 Sedan with the 5AT in it for a few weeks while my car was in the shop. I was quite impressed with how quick it was and it was great in traffic. Kinda ' made me wish I had got the 5AT coupe cuz' it's only a little slower than the 6MT. But guess what? On the weekend when I'm zoomin down PCH on the Cali coast I'm very glad I got the 6MT. I also think if I decide to Mod the car that I will get more HP from the mod's as well. Hope that blather helps, he he.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

Honestly I don't mind driving it in traffic. I usually just leave it in 2nd while traffic is creeping by. AReddy, I'm not trying to flame you or anything but didn't you mention that you were in high school? So I'm betting your commute isn't far, and usually not during rush hour. I say go for the 6MT, the satisfaction will be well worth the occassional pain.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I'd have to disagree, but then again I've been driving stick for a very long time.

I would disagree though about the clutch being heavy. My wife is terrible at driving stick, but this car is very easy for her to drive and finds the clutch on this car very light.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I drive the 6m in heavy traffic at least twice a day. Usually more if i'm traveling between work sites. It's not too bad, the clutch is heavier than say, a honda. It engages fairly low so it shouldn't bother you that it's heavy. It's not as heavy as my coworkers 96' cobra. I always used to kid him that he could probably kick a hole in the wall with his left foot since it gets such a workout from that clutch.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I have to disagree also, the clutch is NOT HEAVY. Its medium.
AReddy....have you ever driven a newer BMW with 5spd? The clutch and gearbox feels nearly identical to that.

The clutch is not as light as most japanese 4-bangers, however it is not as heavy as some german cars (Audi A4)

It not hard at all to drive, after a few months you wont even think about shifting anymore, it will become natural.

i have an idea........go test drive the car!!!!!!! Why do people buy cars without test driving them first???
Its like buying a house without getting a home-inspection first

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I commute in Dallas, TX traffic. I have a DG 6MT. In MY OPINION, the clutch is light. I've driven Mustangs, BMW 325es, & 300ZXs. The mustang 5.0 is by far the heaviest clutch. The G35 clutch is an easy clutch and shouldn't give you any problem. My only problem is having my left calf bigger than my right calf from driving manuals for over 13 years. I got the 6MT b/c after driving the autostick, I could not get good hard launches as I could with the 6MT. Plus the G35 has enough power to skip gears during an upshift. Have fun with the 6MT.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

rajc007: I go to a special magnet school so it's about 15 miles away. That's not a problem though because I just take the turnpike. But other than that, there is some light traffic depending on where you go in Miami. I haven't really driven many cars because I don't even have my license yet. Before I ordered the car, the salesmen took me for a testdrive, but I wasn't allowed to touch it. Thanks for input guys.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

Cell Phones and 6mt don't mix. I don't mind clutching and shifting. Unless your on the highway or somwhere you don't have to shift frequently, put that cell phone away. With left and right hands busy......you don't answer the phone. The 6mt is a good deterrent to cell phone use while driving......

Re: 6MT in Traffic

So you'd fail the California Driver's Test then...

You have to be able to talk on a cellphone, read the paper, and drink a cup of coffee while driving a stick in rush hour traffic.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

I don't mean to offend anybody, but the excuse of getting an Automatic because you drive in "traffic" is LAME. If traffic is that heavy all the time, then why buy a sports car at all? Get a minivan or SUV with an automatic so that you can see above the traffic and not worry about shifting.

Sports cars are meant to be DRIVEN. Makes me cringe everytime I walk by a Corvette, Miata, RX-7, or a Z and see an Automatic transmission in it.

Re: 6MT in Traffic

Have to agree with masetodd about automatics in sports cars. However, lame or not, there's a lot to be said for the pain of being in commute traffic but also, since you're buying a performance oriented car, plenty more to be said for enjoying the off hours with your favorite buddy or babe when all you have is wide open straight aways or eat 'em up curves. ...dean
