Sounds like exactly what you need to do. I bought a cabin air filter from Amazon and changed it and after a week of installation, no more weird smells for me.

Is this the right one for the g35 coupe?
Yes. You really need to learn how to find info. All I did was look at the reviews and it clearly showed people with g35 coupes using it. Also you can find out from the part number which is easily accessible. The DIY video on YouTube is also extremely easy to find. Goodluck
If the odor problem is the evaporator the new filter will not help because the air is filtered before the blower sends it to the evaporator and into the car.
I decided to clean my evaporator in case that is the cause of the odor.
I removed the glove box, in-cabin filter and blower motor. I realized afterwards that I could have just removed the blower motor to access the evaporator which would have saved some time.
Here is a picture of the evaporator, you can see dark coloration on the upper right and bottom center area. I was really curious as to what the condition of the evaporator was so I held my cellphone to the air duct left of blower motor to snap the image.

I sprayed the entire can in there and it drained out correctly so I know the drain tube is not blocked.
I really hopes this does the trick, I'm going to do it again in a month or so due to how dirty the evaporator appeared to be.
