Anyone think this is shady?

http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/cto/2785567374.html

I called this guy today and asked him about the car. He said its a stock motor with a turbo on it. Its got a blown head gasket and thats the only thing wrong. tuned for 421hp single turbo. Only wants 10k for it with 66k miles. Think it sounds shady?

Did you ask which kit it has? Who did the work on the car? Buying a boosted G is risky to begin with, especially with this one being so cheap.
If I were to buy that, first thing I would do is take it to a reputable shop that specializes in VQ's and have them do a detailed inspection, whichever tests they're able to perform, and probably have it retuned just to be safe.

I'd never buy a used car that has/or ever has had an aftermarket turbo kit or supercharger kit installed from a complete stranger. There's so many things that could be wrong with it, not done properly, missing, misused, abused, etc etc etc....the majority of which you may never find out about. Even a mechanic will not be able to tell you for sure if there's something wrong with it....it's one of those things you may discover the first day you drive it....or a couple months down the road. Just too many open-ended questions with a vehicle in that scenario. Primary reason why un-modified vehicles are generally worth more than a modified one.

considering it has a blown head gasket, thats about $2k of work that needs to be done by a shop. I would do a leak down and compression test, if leak down fails than HG is blown, but if the Compression test fails than the the rings are shot. there is also a chance that the HG is so ****ed that compression test will fail but i doubt it.

if the car comes the way it looks on the pictures its worth getting it. even if you just swap out another OEM block for 2-3k its still a good deal for 10k

Funny. I called about this car (3) days ago. Kid is selling the car and his dad answered the phone. HIs dad said he would have his son call me back. Boy has not called yet. Glad he hasn't. I would not buy it.

How much is the car worth? It's got only 66k on the chassis, it's only 2k for a new longblock, why not? 10k sounds like a great deal even if you need to replace the whole motor.

If you don't mind the work of swapping out motors.. I don't see why not.. but if you DO mind the work, then just spend a bit more and get one that is running well.

i guess it all depends on if you wanna deal with the headache, Looking at the car if it looks as good as it is in the picture its definitely worth 10k even if you had to drop a motor into it

Sounds like a lot of potential maintenance work in your future if you buy this car. Don't do it.
