Plastidip holds up better than paint. Powdercoating is the best option. You will see people look for every oppurtunity to hate on plastidip but put regular paint over it and it doesn't look bad

its relatively cheap. something like 6 bucks a can. you would want 2 cans because one is usually enough for one coat, and you want two.

OP. heres how to remove tails. really simple. will take less time and effort than newspaper'ing the whole of the rear.

Also, use real paint for the grill. First time I did my grill I plasti-dipped it and it looked decent, but it didn't have a "painted" look to it, but more of a "wrapped" and I didn't like it. Painted grills look good glossy and shiny, not dull and plasticy looking.

Also, I'd paint the calipers any other color than red. I did mine "brembo gold (lol)" and I think they look good (and funny how people mistake them for brembos from distance). I know people are against painting it but sorry not everyone has $3k for BBKs and don't kid yourself and make the oem brembo size significant to non brembos as if you guys got the 6 piston ones...

here's mine:

Also if u intend to do the headlights, open them up and paint the housing. 1000x better than overlays. looks better and more natural e.t.c.

Blacklight I understand what you're saying as far as your finances go, plus it doesn't matter what all these people or myself think looks best. If YOU like it that's all that matters.

You're doing about the same thing I wanted to do when I first got my G. I'm 23, in school, and I've got bills and rent and a car to pay for and don't have a couple grand laying around to blow on my car. I wanted to take the stock look away from it but still keep it tasteful.

For my taillights I looked into overlays and VHT. I went with VHT because IMO overlays are cheap $hit that look tacky and only people into flames in Dodge trucks should use them. Everything on the G is so flush with the rest of the car everyone will notice you have overlays and like I said IMO, it's tacky and cheap. As long as you know how to spray paint evenly and don't rush it, VHT can look very good and last a long time. Just because "ricers" use VHT doesn't make your G "ricey". Just take your time with it and it will look professionally painted when you're done.

As far as your wheels, I used plastidip on my wheels prior to powder coating them because I wasn't 100% sure I wanted black wheels. Again, take your time with the plastidip and they'll last a hell of a long time. Depending on what wheels your G has (mine has the 19" forged wheels) The plastidip comes out with a powder coated look anyways. Plus no one is going to come up inspecting your wheels close enough to rag on you about using plastidip and not spending $500 to get them powder coated professionally.

I also painted my calipers, I don't have the Brembos but I painted them because I wanted to. I like the look of painted calipers and I really don't care what anyone else has to say about it.

So like I said, in the end, get your opinions you want from everyone but as long as you're happy with the final product that's all that matters. None of these people are paying your car payment.

Here's a couple tips as well...

VHT
  • Take the taillights out, it's real easy and makes it a lot easier to paint them because you can orientate them however works for you. Also you don't have to worry about masking off the car.
  • VHT is basically a tinted clear coat, so for best results wetsand your lights first...
  • I used 800grit - 1600grit - 2000grit, while your sanding MAKE SURE you keep it wet, just use a spray bottle.
  • After sanding give them a quick wash, dry thoroughly, and paint.
  • While your painting, keep your strokes even and light. VHT gets dark real quick so be careful unless you want them black.

It's up to you how you want to finish it off, but to protect mine I put two heavy coats of clear coat, lightly sanded, then polished to a shine that makes them look like they were made stock like that.

Plasti Dip
  • Paint slowly with this, it coats a lot slower than regular paint.
  • For durability and ease of removal when the time comes, do 3-4 coats. I used roughly a can per wheel and it lasted a long time and came off in one thick piece when I was ready to take it off.
  • Your Infiniti cap in the middle, if you have the forged wheels, pops out, just push it from the inside of the wheel.
  • Mask of your valve as well just so you don't cake that up with plasti dip.
  • Allow plenty of time for it to dry before you place your wheels back on your car, any tackiness will hold onto any little rocks or dirt from the road.
  • When you wash your car just normal soap and water that you use on your car will keep your wheels looking clean, I wouldn't recommend wheel cleaner as the solvents will probably dull or ruin the plasti dip.

Not by any means am I a professional with any of this but I've done it personally myself and it worked out extremely well. So if you have any more questions that I may be able to help with let me know.

OP, if I were you I'd go with the powder coating if you're sure you want black rims. It's not as pricey as you think and honestly, you could probably find a friend or a friend of a friend to hook it up or at least give you a good price. IMO $500 is way too much like someone else said. You can find someone who will do a good job for a couple hundred bucks. But like I said, find a friend.

In my experience, Nite Shade works just fine and is $16 for a can at an auto parts store. One coat will tint, two will be pretty dark. I got busted for speeding in my old Civic that had it and tinted tail lights got tacked on. It's easy to remove with Goo Gone or a little stripper, but be careful not to let it cloud your lights.

Please believe me I wish I could powder coat. but even a couple hundred bucks is out of my range right now. compared to the 12 bucks ill spend on 2 cans of plasti dip. again, all this is all temporary. i wont be able to send my car to get anything professionally done until the next time i have about a 100 bucks to spare, where ill send it to get window tints.

Understood there. I just graduated from school and a G was my present to myself when I found a good job. Baby steps. I think of this as my ongoing project. I do what I can when I can. Let us know how it turns out!

You'd be fine with 2 coats, just like I said before, paint slow, it goes on a lot slower than normal paint. Get a good base coat, then your second coat, go on a little heavier.

I bought 5 cans, and went through about 4.5 cans for 3 good coats. Bought them at Home Depot was something like $37.

As far as the powder coating goes, eventually, yes, if in the future you love your black wheels go get them powder coated so it's permanent and you won't have to worry about anything. It never happened for me but if something happens to a tire and you need it unmounted or anything that requires a shop to mess with the wheel, it will more than likely get chipped off. One thing, it's very easy to touch up and not notice as long as a huge piece doesn't get pulled off

You may be able to find powder coating done around you cheaper, but the amount of shops near me that powder coat is very limited so I think they just charge what they want. I paid $120/wheel and that was the cheapest. But in the end, I like my stock wheels and I like them black, so I just got my wheels powder coated instead of spending $500+/wheel for what I like.

My calipers looked horrible with an ugly rust looking color. I used this kit and its easy to use. It just took forever to get the car on jackstands and prep.
