Yes he said he tried 87 octane, and that's a no-no, but now uses only 93.
If he's not driving outrageously, he definitely has something wrong and should have Nissan check it out.

LOL, joeyjojoe, my area gets 87,89 and 93. I meant we don't have 91 and I don't want to do any mixing experiments BTW, I get 15mpg with very short trips (~15 mins) and lots of stop and go, plus it's winter time. I'm hoping the G can hit 20mpg in the summer, but we'll see.

ebuy, have you checked your tire pressures? If you get a winter fuel in your area that might also be decreasing your mileage.

what rpm do you usually shift at? Do you usually drive in areas where there's alot of up and down hills? That makes some difference too. If you have a manual, try to skip gears, that might help.

Um thats not a good idea...by skipping gears you put a strain on your engine/tranny beacuse it has to quickly try to get up to a nominal rpm for that specific gear, and in turn you must push the gas pedal harder in order to do so. So EVEN if you might save gas like that (never heard of that being done), you are damaging your tranny.

Back to the topic though...if you are downshifitng alot at high RPMS, then I'd change that a bit too.

Well, that's how Corvettes and Camaros get their good gas mileage. If you're not pushing it, they skip from 1st to 4th. You don't have to skip that much, but I usually start in 2nd and skip to 4th, then 6th. The whole point of skipping gears is to save gas, so why would you be pushing the gas pedal harder? We have plenty of TQ to skip gears, granted that you don't want to accelerate fast. I don't think you'll damage your tranny. There's no reason why it would be.

O MAN... 11 mpg... that is like my dad's suburban...
the G35 6MT is supposed to get around 20-26
so i would figure at least 15+ mpg when driven hard...

11 mpg is frigging like a 4x4 being driven hard...

and skipping gears... i thought its better to wind through each gear since each gear is designed to for optimal power vs gas consumption... + i read on another forum that skipping may cause extra wear on the tranny...
if ur too lazy to shift through the gears... y did u get manual ^^

i mean if u skip from 1st to 3 say @ 3k wont that drop ur rpm in 3rd to under 1k? that would bog ur engine like no other... its better to shift say @ like 2 k in each gear get up to speed...

and on freeway instead of going 70+ keep with 60 and that should help too

sorry that was long i have no like ^^;;

I rarely start in 1st unless I want a fast acceleration or I'm in an up hill. 1st gear is too short to do any use when I usually shift under 3k anyways. When I shift from 2nd to 4th @ around 3k, it lands around @ 1500 RPM. So I don't see how that can hurt the tranny. I NEVER up shift where it'll land @ under 1k RPM. Who ever said I was lazy to shift? But I don't really have to argue with you. I've been doing that for years on several cars, and my old Integra, it now has over 130k miles, and the tranny is still good as new. So do it or not, it up to you. Just giving ebuy929 some ideas. Can you give me your logic in why it would cause extra wear on the tranny? Each gear has a certain multiple for putting TQ to the ground, right? So if you chose higher gear, less TQ to the ground. But if you chose the gear that has enough TQ to make the car go, how can that cause extra wear on the tranny?
11 mpg is way too low. When I average 80 on the freeway, I get 22+MPG. So 70+ should get him more than 22 MPG. Maybe his driving condition is different than ours. Maybe he has more hills. Who knows.

yeah , 11 mpg is awful. unless you are doing burnouts at every light.

when i got the car with 11 miles on it, i was getting like 16mpg and i thought that was bad. im at like 20-21mpg now with 900 miles on it.

might wanna get that checked out, since 11mpg is probably not normal.

City driving is the problem. MPG drops like a rock in stop and go situations. If most or all of your driving is in town (I live in NYC too), that's why. Take it out on the highway and see the difference. You should get 20 MPG+, and as much as 25-28 for steady 70 MPH cruising if you have a light foot.

I drive quite sedately most (but not all) the time, and I average 25 MPG on the Nav in about 85-90% highway driving. 10-13 MPG in all stop and go NYC traffic doesn't surprise me a bit.

I keep very detailed fueling records on my G35 6MT as I use it as my commuter car and can get some of this reimbursed from my employer. I hit the high water mark on this last tank averaging an outstanding 18.8 mpg. Weekends seem to really kill fuel efficiency. I get around 15 driving normal (that is, beating on it pretty hard). Worst yet was 13.8.
