Rear brake caliper making loud, screeching sound - repair price reasonable?
Hi all,
Bought an 2005 G35 coupe 6MT in December 2011 and just recently started hearing very loud screeching sound when driving. Took it to a mechanic this morning and he stated that the rear caliper was locking up and therefore I needed new rear calipers, rotors and pads.
He priced it out to be about $900. Does this sound appropriate for labor and parts? Doing my homework now but need to get this fixed as soon as possible and time is of the essence so decided to come to the experts.
Please let me know if anyone else has had this problem and if this fee quote is reasonable. ANY insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Also, as a side note, is this something that can be prevented in the future? Mechanic noted that it's probably from the salt used on the roads here in the Northeast.

Im sure the labor is legitimate but as far as the parts go don't let them order it. They won't get the parts for cheap. Look at the private marketplace for some good deals on brakes.
Disc brakes are great, but require some maintenance (that is pretty easy to do yourself vs the $100 shop rate) The biggest thing that happens over time is the pins that the calipers float on, get dirty & stick. This won't allow the caliper(s) & pad(s) squeeze the rotor as intended. Can cause uneven wear, reduced braking & possible noises. The rears are more prone to this as it sees all the crap from the front wheels.
All you need to do is remove your wheel(s) & unbolt your caliper off, service the 2 pins per caliper by cleaning them with emery cloth or sand blaster (whatever you have) then apply some good quality grease. Voila your brakes will be back to new. If you live in winter climates with salt used on the roads, I'd suggest this service at least once a yr...less if you live south. Good luck!!
