aem cai question
aem cai question
so i bought a aem cold air intake off a seller,,, i installed this intake using just the 1 pipe and filter as a short ram. i wanted the intake to stay on the top and not run down the bumper. is this ok to do? will i still get the gains and good cold air flow?
It's fine. You'll probably suck in more warm air than cold air, but since our cars do no good with CAI, it's useless anyways. - Should have stuck with the stock intake and grab a drop in filter. If you need it in simpler terms, you won't gain anything with the new filter regardless of placement, and there's a good chance you'll lose a couple HP.
I wish Rob could have tested the AEM filter in his Intake Dyno Myth experiment to support what I'm saying.

So does every other intake. Real world dyno tests show differently - tests are so easily manipulated as well as the advertising wording. Do you believe everything you see, read or hear?
The point of intakes, on our cars, are mainly for show looks and/or sound. If you don't believe me about them being []ialmost[/i] useless regarding HP gains, look up the dyno sheets yourself - and ask what the people who are making nearly 300whp are running. I italicized almost because 2-3 hp is very...relative to people. Some people love getting the last .1 hp out of their engine, others view as $250+ for a new AEM intake for that very few HP to be cost-ineffective.
You can lose power 2 ways, possibly 3. I'll explain this. The first is running a short ram air which can pull in more warm air than hot air (compared to the stock intake since it has a route coming from between the hood and grill, and compared to running down closer to your bumper.) The second, is since the AEM is make out of metal, it is very prone to heat soak from ambient temperatures and the heat from the engine itself - basically defeating the purpose of sucking in cold air from down below since it's warming up via the emanating heat from the tube itself. Third is the bends in the tubing which has to do with restrictions of air flow and such - not a big big deal, but it has some affect.

isnt the purpose of the extra pipe to bring in colder air? that why it runs by the bumper
well in my case the onlythings i noticed was the exhaust tone was a bit deeper when i opened the throttle up and i can hear more air being sucked in

Wouldn't make much difference, if any at all. I would personally go back to a z-tube and preferred drop in filter, ie k&n, hks, amsoil with the Rev-Up air box off an 06/07 6mt. Or invest in one of the few that actually has notable dyno gains, specifically the Stillen Box - which perfects the OEM intake concept.
The extra tube does bring in colder air, however, the long distance and bends aren't helpful. - You wanted to only run the short ram air configuration though.

$200ish. If you're just looking for sound, just start watching youtube vids to find one you like. I personally like the Injen intake sound the best. Others just don't have much difference to my ears.
Edit: You should be proud of him for keeping it to one thread. When he asked about his exhaust thread, he made 4 separate ones before I stopped counting. I think Marcus cleaned those up tho...lol
