Buying a G, how to detect oil consumption?

I'm loving G and looking to buy one (03-06) 6MT. I've been read in this forum and found this type of issue for G coupe. Is there any way you can physically detect this issue? Please help guys. Thanks

It's only really a problem on the '05-'06 Rev-Up (Manual Tranny) Coupes for the cars that you mentioned you were interested in. This is pretty much a non-issue on the '03 and '04 G35, or any auto-tranny version of the '05/'06 G's.

Aside from checking the level of the oil on the car when you inspect it and seeing if it is really low, there's no real reliable way to tell aside from doing an oil consumption test. I don't know if a compression check would reveal this problem or not.... although if it did, I would think that Infiniti would use that as their diagnosis mechanism instead of doing their typical method of checking for the oil consumption problem (which involves tamper-sealing the oil drain plug, dipstick, and filler cap, and then having you drive the car for a certain amount of miles and report back to them for a follow-up checkup after that interval is completed).

Can't really detect it unless you buy it and drive it, until you see the shortage of oil when you look at the dip stick. Many 03/04 6mt Sedans and some Auto's have been known to Burn oil as well. I know two people need to change their engines because it burns so much oil.

I don't see any way to detect it unless you drive it for a few thousand miles and inspect it regularly.. so in short, it is almost impossible.. unless you contact the seller every few thousand miles to check the level and make sure he isn't topping off before he sees you. d:

Sean (SxExCx) answered this question on a previous thread, "Change the oil and test drive it for a 1K miles and check the oil." That's the only way you can be 100% sure the '05 thru '06 REVUP motor doesn't have issues with OC. If you buy this year from the dealership it might be practical to get a short warranty to CYA....Gary

My G35 2005 consumes about 2.5-5 mm, + -1 mm, of oil per 550 kilometers. Spark plugs were changed at 105,000 kilometers.......no oil on them and the engine does not make "noise" nor is there any form of smoke coming from the tail pipes! I'am not sure what this means, not great news anyway, but she runs fine!

HKK!

When I was going through my oil consumption adventure I did notice that the insides of my exhaust tips where charcoal black. When I looked at other cars even other G35's I noticed that you could usually see metal or slight rusting but not fully coated black.

I clean the tips after my short block was swapped and there was a lot of black residue coating them.

Its just an observation.

Good Luck

I have an 04 Coupe M6 and it burned oil about 1 quart every 2 fillups! (I just had my engine replaced). You can't really tell unless you drive it and check the oil.. the only thing that can give it away (at least on my car when it burned oil) is if you start it up on a cold start.. when my engine burned oil the exhaust would let out a cloud of black smoke.

Good luck!

Don't worry too much about it. It really isn't THAT big a deal. All you need to do is just have an extra quart of oil in your trunk.

It's only really a problem on the '05-'06 Rev-Up (Manual Tranny)

^ I heard it was bad on some of the sedans as well. Not 100% sure as I only heard from 2 sedans that their car consumes oil like a dehydrated camel.

Ya think........It might help if you asked to see the service records of the car you're buying. But even the best mechanic can't tell if your car has OC unless you do the 1K mile test....so you take a chance if you love the car bottom line!
