Couple OC questions

Hi guys, couple quick ?'s

I'm looking at a G35 coupe, 59,000 miles and the only problem is it burns oil, 1 quart every 4000 miles.

- How severe is this?

- Will a catch can help?

- Does the problem worsen over time?

- How does it affect the engine?

Thanks guys, not all answers are needed I just need some quick answers as I wanted to check the car out on Saturday.

1 Qt every 4000 miles is pretty much normal with a lot of engines.

^ second that , mine consumes that much as well. A catch can won't really affect how much oil comes out of your engine, it will just give you a way to gauge some of the oil that is lost as well as keeping the oil from ending back up in your intake/plenum. End result is you are still -1qt motor oil in the end.

A quart every 4K miles isn't bad but it may not get any better. Are you using 5W/30 like the manual recommends? You might try 10W/40 and see how that effects your consumption. Catch can won't make any difference with your issue, but they are good for your VQ motor. One as simple as the Home Depot can (Search) is worth the $$. Using 1 qt every 4K miles won't effect your engine, just watch it closely....Gary

Most of us use synthetic but having OC issues isn't the time to be switching brands or types. Doing so might increase the OC and the only thing I'd change w/b the weight from the 5W30 to 10W40 which might help. Some dealership might even tell him 1qt in 4K miles is normal....Gary
