Anyone else have this problem of the seat belt barely retracting? maybe some DIY's for fixing it even?

I've just mastered the tuck-and-leave, I move the slack towards the seat quickly so the door doesn't slam on it and walk away like its not a problem.

My 05 coupe has a plastic clip next to the headrest that rotates up and holds the seat belt in a more comfortable position when I'm seated. If I rotate it down the seat belt retracts just fine, but if I leave it in the position I drive in it doesn't retract. It's a little annoying but I just rest it on the seat.. I'll try to take a pic tomorrow.

It's normal on these cars. The actual seat belt unit itself is fine. It's the tension from the plastic clip that prevents the belt from retracting.

I just gave up. I don't care if my door eats a foot or two of my seat belt when I get out. I don't ever notice until I go to get back in the car, anyway.

Yeah a pic would be nice, and yeah when I close my door on the belt and try to Rip it out, It pulls the door gasket out lol

Seatbelt retractor has been a major PIA since day one. There is no fix and I was told by Infiniti I needed to guide it back every time I leave, so I trained myself to do so....Gary

It's that hard to take an extra 2.5 seconds to open the door 2" so that the seat belt will move freely...?

But in the 21st Century you'd think they'd create a system that worked correctly! These are the worst seatbelt retractors I've ever used, WTF all they need is a stronger spring for them to work correctly! Brett, it's not about time but the simple fact they don't work right!

I just never let it bother me I suppose. I've got bigger things to worry about than a seatbelt that doesn't retract properly. Just because it doesn't retract doesn't mean it isn't going to save my life in a wreck.

My point was, if your seatbelt is caught in the door, regardless of whether the retractor works or not (yes, this has happened in my Maxima, too, and those belts worked just fine), why rip it out of the door and risk damaging something instead of taking an extra 2.5 seconds to open the door and remove it?

This is the position I leave it in, it stays up when you are seated and keeps the belt from retracting.


This is the other position that will let it retract normally.

INfinitis/Nissans always had seat belt retraction problems, The best solution for cars that are out of warranty - I found a little bit of 3M dry lube on the plastics where the belts touches the plastic loop surface will make the belts retract much better.

But wouldn't that lube your neck also?

I just straighten out the belt once I'm out of the car so it winds back up, takes like 2 seconds. It is annoying but its almost second nature by now.

NO it won't wind up on your neck or clothes that's why it's called dry lube (stays where it's applied), the lube (made of Teflon particles) sticks to plastic provides smother surface for belt to slide through,

That's pretty sweet, I may look into that myself after some other maintenance. Although its not quite the same without neck lube... lol

Just don't use graphite lube or you'll have a black neck. Although with these belts I think a little neck lube would be beneficial.
