Considering trading the G for a Z? Good decision?

In the fall or near winter this year, im considering trading in the G. I have an auto 04 G now and I definately want a 6mt for my next car. The more I look at the Z, the more i like it! I used to think the G was so much better than the Z cuz of the price tag and name, but the more I think about it, that respect has dwindled.

+ for the Z
-Good looking (maybe a little better looking than the G)
-Faster
-More mods
-Cheaper

- for the Z
-Everyone and their mom has a Z
-No back seat (like i use the back seat anyways...)
-High insurance

+ for the G
-Baller status (name)
-Superior interior quality and comfort [LUXURY]
-I see less G's on the street than i do Z's

Dont get me wrong, I love my G, but in order to get another car, im gonna have to save some money over the summer. Im sure I can save at least $5-7k in the summer (got a new job! ) even with having a gf and im sure the Z would be the cheaper alternative. I am estimating my budget with selling my car and saving money would be around $33k-$35k, so im pretty much in the market for a G or Z. And im gonna buy used to avoid the ridiculous sales tax bs ($3k!).

*Next car must have nav, 6mt, <10k mi

Or another option is to just hang on to my car and wait for the GTR coming in 06 or 07 (?) and save some dough...

Your thoughts? Z or G? Wait for the GTR?

Yea, i can see your point on that....but i guess you are lucky. I go to Towbin Infiniti in Las Vegas and the customer service here is sh**. my friend who has a Z gets better customer service than i do. Your lucky to have a nice dealership/service. When i go in for service, it is such a hassle dealing with these a$$holes. Very simple and quick oil changes take over an houe and a half here... Not only that, I have been lied to by my service rep so many times that I feel cheated for buying an infiniti. Their reuputable customer service that goes along with the infiniti name doesnt apply to my dealership i guess. I really have no regard anymore for the customer service for infiniti vs. nissan.

Keep your G man. But if you must do it for 6mt, wait for the GTR.

I too feel like everybody at Infiniti is very nice. I had a honda s2000 before this with some differential problems and it took 10 phones calls to honda of america and many arguments with them at honda for them to finaly get me a referbished unit under warranty, so far i had a tranny grind (got a new tranny ordered over night and installed within 1 week of bringing it in), cd player broke (ordered it week before christmas was installed before the new year), rattles from my rear speakers ( dont know what they did but its gone), and all for $0.00. I go in there and they love me, love my car, and care less that its modded. My friend who had a Z bought wheels from Nissan when he purchased the car, and than the Zs had the braking noise vibrating problem and they told him his warranty was void becuase of the rims. They sold him the car with no stock wheels, with the aftermarket enkei stillen wheels in 18" same size as stock, stock tires, and woudlnt perform a recall on his car becusae of it.... Nissan on the top 20 customer service survey which one im not sure , its hanging in infiniti is like #18 , infiniti is #1. I would look for 6 spd 05 G if i were you.... As far as being faster than the Z the extra few hp prob makes up for the weight diff...

btw if the gtr looks anything like it does in that magazine that just had it on the cover for 70,000 i would buy an 03 g throw wheels on it, rear end, gears, clutch, flywheel, built the motor up for turbo, a standalone computer with good tuning, and whichever twin turbo kit you like.... and after all that still have 10-20 grand to play with... wait till 2007 and sh*t all over every gtr you see....

I always liked the design of the G35C over the 350Z, so I would personally not
do it, but perhaps if you just want a 6MT, do a 05 G35C?

No way will the production GT-R look that close to a G35 Coupe.

If you're only 18 years old, a Z might fit your personality/lifestyle better than a G. You can't go wrong either way. The G is better looking- the Z's only problem is the rear end. It also depends on what kinds of roads you drive on- if you live at a place with terrible roads, the Z will wear you out. The resale on a G should be higher than the Z. The wait for the GT-R idea is a good one too.

I agree that either choice is an excellent one. I also agree that generally speaking the Z is more for the younger crowd and the G more for a somewhat older crowd. Personally, of all coupes out there, I think the G35 coupe is easily the best looking coupe on the market. And if I were buying a car strictly on appearance, I'd take the G over the Z. Best of luck in your decision. By the way, having owned a Z before I bought my G35x, the harshness of the Z's ride even for a sports car was far too overwhelming for me.

Nissan only gives you 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty vs Infiniti's 4/60. If you buy used, you won't have nearly as much of it left with the Z. That's another minus for the Z, but if you don't like to keep your cars for too long I guess it's irrelevant.

At least at my local Nissan dealer, people are NOT gentle with the cars. I take my car in all the time and while I'm there I always go for a ride with the techs when they testdrive customer cars. Maximas and 350Zs get pushed A LOT! The way they pull in and out of the shop freaks me out... but I wouldn't know how Infiniti compares to that. At least you get a loaner when your take your G in.

When you say the Z is cheaper, you don't take into account your depreciation hit. In fact if you want a Track model with Brembos, I doubt it will be any cheaper than an '03/04 G 6MT. And when you say the Z is faster.. well, I've driven both cars and there isn't really any difference in how fast they feel, the big difference is in handling and nimbleness. All the rest of your pros and cons are very true.

But if the Z is what you really want, then get it. There's nothing worse than driving a car that's not for you and doesn't make you happy.

Well, I won't get so much into the argument of which one is better. I was seriously looking at both when I bought the G. I'll tell you why I chose the G though.

The simple version is that the G was a better value for me. I wanted a 6MT, Brembos, premium sound, and leather seats. Couldn't get all these things in a Track Model. I could have taken a touring model Z and added the Brembos and a system and had almost what I wanted. But the cost would end up kind of high and the fit and finish of the system would be questionable as I would either have to spend a lot of money or use a screen that fits in the double-din opening. On the other hand, the G35 comes with all the options I wanted. And the warranty is better. The interior is nicer(while the Z's is pretty cheap looking, it wasn't a make or break type of an issue). And the G just seemed more practical overall. 2 reasonable rear seats, and decent trunkspace. The Z's trunk was a joke. Either way, the decision was kind of hard. I still wanted the Z to the last moment, just because it looks so ****** good. But in the end, I had to think long term. The G was just a better decision for me in this respect.

If I had to choose between an 05G and an 05 Track Z, it might be different. Sinc eI have my car already, I have't thought it through or done the research, but the lack of Brembos might make a difference. Not to mention the Pearl Yellow Color available on the Z.

i don't think it's necessarily fair to say the Z is more expensive to insure than the G. when i shopped between the 2, i found that the Z was actually about $250 a year less than the G to insure.
