what's the difference between not running a muffler and this.....nothing.

The difference is this would just sound like you had a leak or were taking one....

I dont have a big gap its actually a leak by the gasket mide pipe and muffler (tried to do this and the bolts were siezed and the Sawzall blade was dull).......... sound fine to me, made me happy.
