Considering a 06-07 G35 coupe

Hey all,

I own a 05 G35 sedan and my wife now wants to replace her 03 MT Celica for a G35 MT coupe. So we're considering having two G35s in the family. I do have a few concerns and I was hoping to get some insight from you all.

- I found a pool of oil the last time I replaced the spark plugs on my current G. Is the same issue also found in the 06-07 Gs?

- The MT and white options she prefers are very limited in our area (CA bay area) and the only one we found is from a used car dealership in the north end of Sacramento. It looksimmaculate with about 75,000, sport model, 6sp, and white. Carfax does show that there were no damages, one personal owner, but the previous owner was in Texas. For some reason I see red flags just because it's from another state. Should I be concerned? What should I look for if I plan on test driving the car?

- Whether I go with this car or not, I think I will purchase the extended warranty. Would it be wise to purchase it from the dealer or are there other options?

Thanks.

1. I don't know about the pool of oil, but the possibility of oil consumption is there.

2. I don't have experience with buying cars from other states, but its very possible the owner just wanted to move to another area, job opportunity, etc.

3. There are third party options, but beware, many of these third party warranty companies (these are the exact same warranties that most dealers offer on used cars by the way, but just at a premium) make it very hard for you, say if you didn't use the warranty and want your money back, or etc.

Cars from other states can be lease turn-ins. When the car comes in, the dealership doesn't actually get first dibs. It goes to Auction and is bid on and any dealership can buy it and transport it for sale.

That's the history behind my car. Was a lease in NJ. Once turned in, my dealership in MA bought it, and i bought it here in MA.

Pool of oil in spark plug area = valve covers needs replacement. Normally its just a gasket but not how nissan made it.

Cars can be from anywhere. Leases, or relocation of owner. What if that TX guy got a job offer in CA, he drove it and then traded the car in here because he now has a company car. Personally i would just stay away from flood areas just because i dont want that increase percentage of a flood car.

DONT TRUST CARFAX 100%!!!!!!

There are plenty of cases where accidents aren't reported, reported to carfax, or carfax not properly documenting them. Personal friends and myself have owned cars that have been in minor and MAJOR accidents and years later we pull the carfax for fun and some dont show the accident. A fender bender with a police report, yea i dont expect much. But a huge T-Bone with both car totaled out, the car still has a clean title. Now thats just wrong. We reported the info to CARFAX and still nothing.

For EXTENDED warranties, keep this in mind. Say dealership X sells you a car. They have a deal with G warranties, G warranties gives X $100 for every warranty they sell. G warranty sells you 5 years for $500 but you need to wait 6 months before using. In about 8 months G warranties can pack up and file bankruptcy. They do this a LOT!!!! And if you do make a claim in the 2 month gap you are covered, they will nickel and dime everything. "Oh your engine's bad, PROVE it" I've seen it happen. Only go with OEM factory extended warranty.

Thank you all for the responses.

- The possibility of a valve cover replacement is a big concern to me due to finding replacements if the car is out of the manufacturers warranty. I have been reading about others using a vendor in SoCal with delays due to unavailability. My sedan needs one and have not had the time to resolve the issue.

- TurTLe, I was thinking about the same about it coming from a possible flood prone area. I will probably start peeling away to look under all the crevices they have missed.

- The extended warranty sounds like a bigger concern when it is coming from a used car lot. I would believe that new/used car dealerships would have picked warranty programs from established companies.

Well, I'll keep everything in mind. I'll try to see at least 4 different coupes today. BTW, here is the link to the car we were interested in:

They're asking for $17,995 but I'm wondering if I can bring it down to $15,000 out the door.

remember new/used car dealerships are in it to make money. Whoever gives the best kick back will most like get their service. They dont have any obligations because in some ways it doesn't effect their image. Its not their fault the company went under, best they can do to make it right is offer you a DISCOUNT on the NEW company they do warranty with. LOL

TX should be solid, Super storm that hit the NY area, their cars should be slowing showing up in the next year or so.

$18k car ends up being what like $21k OTD and if you want extended warranty thats another $500-1500. And you want $15k OTD, LOL. It never hurts to try but thats like asking the guy at print me the winning lotto ticket,

I just purchased my 07' 6MT in October for $19K OTD (that includes tax/title license & 2years bumper to bumper warranty). They had the car listed at $17.9 just like yours. My main concern was the oil consumption issue so I got a carfax and called the Infiniti dealer that had serviced it. They confirm that all service was done and that the short block was replaced due to the oil consumption issue. I've been a happy camper since
