Lube Locks and Hinges

Just wondering what I should use to lubricate them. I have a can of white grease, will that work? Or use something else?

Are there any suspension parts to lubricate?

I use an ancient product called "Doorease" and have for years, some autoparts stores still carry it. I make the rounds of hood, doors and trunklid twice a year, a little dab will do ya....Gary

I always use White Lithium on for locks and hinges. Try to make sure you clean the hinges down before spraying them with white lithium.

It's also very VERY important to make sure you lubricate the hinges on your hood. These are prone to seizing up and bending when you open the hood, which can result in damage to the paint on the surrounding panels. I've found the best way to lube the hood hinges is to take two of those little plastic straws that come with the aerosol spray lube cans, and connect them together by cutting a small section of rubber hose (about 1/2" long) and feeding one end of each straw into the rubber hose. The rubber hose section will give you a flexible joint so that you can angle the spray stream under and around the bodywork and get at the hinges without having to turn the spray can upside down(making it not work). If you don't do this, you might have a hard time actually getting the lubricant to where it needs to go just by using the standard single-straw approach.

Also remember to lube up your trunk hinges as well as the latch/lock mechanism for the hood.

Thanks guys. These cars don't have any suspension lubrication requirements do they?

If the hinges are already partially seized, you may need to break them free first with some Seafoam Deep Creep or possibly PB-Blaster in order to prevent the hinges from bending and damaging the surrounding metal.

Once those penetrating rust/breaking chemicals have done their job and the hinges move freely, blow them clean with compressed air and then liberally lubricate them with white lithium grease.

For future reference.... white lithium grease is pretty much about as common of a chemical as there is in an auto parts or hardware store. There is no need to order it online.

No problem. If you've never used PB-Blaster before, be careful where you spray it. It will eat rubber if exposed to it long enough(requires quite some time to do this though), so be very careful spraying it blindly around on things like rubber hoses, rear-main seals and other engine seals, and windshield gaskets and then not going back and cleaning up the overspray.

If you use Seafoam Deep Creep instead of PB-Blaster, you won't have this problem... but Deep Creep costs about 70% more per can than PB Blaster does. Deep Creep is a little harder to come by than PB-Blaster, but i know for a fact that they sell it at Advance Auto.

I have used pb blaster before for replacing my rotors but I am not aware about the damage that it can cause on other things. I'll use seafoam instead, i don't want to create another problem. Lol thanks again, you guys are AWESOME!

Don't know if I would even spray PB Blaster near painted areas.

Did my hood hinges over the weekend, there were on rust or anything. So I sprayed them with WD40 and left it overnight. The next day when I opened my hood it was fine. No problem at all. Anyway I put some lithium grease just in case. Thanks again..
