mm/quarts for oil consumption
mm/quarts for oil consumption
Hello,
I looked up the TSB from 2010 for oil consumption, it mentions 8 mm low on the dipstick to fail the test.
Does anyone know how many quarts it is for the 8 mm mentioned in the TSB?
I called a couple of dealers near here and they all mention quarts not mm. Called Infiniti and they won't tell me, only that its probably normal for my mileage (50k miles).
The car is a 2007 coupe and the powertrain ends. I'm actually going back for the second test today.
Thanks!

The cars take 4.5 qts to fill. Best way to check your consumption is actually by letting it sit overnight and checking the dipstick when the car is cold. The reason I say that is because the oil flows right down past the dipstick and therefore you don't get a completely accurate reading immediately after an oil change.
However oil consumption is normal in these cars. I guess the only real way to tell is to do an oil change and only fill one quart, wait till it settles overnight and get a reading, that'll be your base reading. After that fill the other quarts the following morning and see where it is. This will allow you to see where you are at with 1 quart and where your at when it's full. Either way that's my idea, it's tedious and perhaps ridiculous, but it could technically work.

how much oil would it be if my mark was down 6mm? I suck at math.. It appears im going down by 6mm every 1000 miles. Im not sure how much to add.. if I dont get any advice im gunna end up getting oil changes every 1000 miles
im an under the hood noob...

There's a whole thread about this. The 8mm TSB is interesting, however I doubt your car is doing much more than burning a normal amount of oil. Do you drive the car hard?
The way I've narrowed it down, and I'm sure someone else has thought of this is the exhaust cams have been retarded in order to increase power at redline. Problem is that the overpressurized chamber can cause blow by and to make matters worse put a strain on your PCV which in turn results in oil jumping into your intake, feeding into air/fuel and causes you to burn oil. People running catch cans probably wonder why they have oil in they're catch cans building up.
If it's that much of a worry take it to the stealership and have them do the oil change an inquire about the TSB and just explain that you noticed "an unusual consumption in oil" which to them means running the diagnostics and checking it out and recording the results. At that point if the engine is faulty you got a free motor compliments of them, if not then you've got nothing to worry about and should only have to pay for the oil change.
