I think WINGSPRINT is right. Most tachs are off by a few hundred.
Redline is 7000 but when your tach reads 7000 it does not mean that those are your rpms.
I have a 98 honda prelude that has a redline of 7600 limiter at 7700. The tach is off by 400 rpms. The limiter hits at 8100 and I shift at 8000 which in reality is 7600 redline.
After the break in, hit your limiter and see where its at, then just shift a little before that.

Just cause you can go past redline does not mean you are meeting your torque or HP since we all know that it drops EXPONENTIALLY after redline. And assuming these are 40K cars you would hope its precisely tuned to specs meaning redline is exactly where you make your max output. Only way is to take your car to get dyno tests and see where your indvidual car is making max. But if you don't have mods then I wouldnt bother.

The point of going up to Redline is so when you shift into a higher gear, your RPM's will drop into the meat of the power band. Then if you increase the air flow through the engine you start loosing less and less on the top end.

Ok, all of this makes sense. But I want to know what is the fuel/electronic cut off on this car. At what RPM's does the motor cut out to prevent damage, no matter if you're foots on the gas or not? When I know that, then I will set the REV light.

This car pulls harder from 1st through 6th a lot more than my 04 350Z.

Here's an answer, just floor the thing till you hit the rev limiter....\

I mean the rev limiter is there for a reason, to protect your engine, it you hit the rev limiter its not harming your engine, its doing its job, pushing the rpms back down.

As for me i was going to do the hard break in, but decided against it, 280miles and I won't go over 4k rpms.

Hard break-in is the biggest piece of junk info that I have heard in a while. Though we are not machines, the concept is the same. when you get up in the morning, and go for a jog, it is propper to warm up first to ensure you dont hurt your body wether it be the muscles or your internals. Same applies for an engine. you dont ram the revs up upon initial driving. once the tiny atoms of the metal find their place and balance out, then the engine ready to be revved like mad. If you start off going hard, the block becomes just that much more brittle.

Isn't extremely bad for the car to bring up to the redline??? I've always heard that even shifting as high as 5500 or 6000 rpms often is very bad. Any opinions?

no, not really....in a lot of cars you have to rev well over 6k rpms to get going. My old celica GTS had no ***** under 6k rpms but all the way up to 8200rpms it flew....same goes for the S2000 and the RX8. If you want the car to last more than 200k miles, then I wouldn't suggest it though.

open up the manual man!

Just press the odometer reset button on your guage cluster untill you see 8000, then let go. Then press and hold for 2 seconds until it starts to blink then let go again. Then while its blinking, start clicking and the RPMS will be incremented by 100...keep clicking until your desired RPMs, then let go and just wait and till it sets itself. For break in period I think the manual says 4K RPM. I put it at 3500, this way while driving on the freeway, it wont be blinking constantly (although I am usually at 2.5-3K on the freeways).

Actually, in most factory cars, the spacing in the 1st two gears is terrible in terms of maximizing torque to the wheels. If you were to chart the torque or HP curve relative to each gear and the speeds in each gear, the optimal shift point will be where each curve crosses the curve in the next gear. But in most cars, the curves between the 1st and second gears never cross. Sometimes even between 2nd and third. But as you get to higher gears, it can actually be better to shift before redline. And redline is NOT where you make your max output. The peak acceleration in any one gear will always occur at peak torque. The best acceleration for any given wheel speed will be where HP is highest.

On this topic alone this question has been asked like 5 times..........you CAN NOT set the rev limiter on our cars or any stock car I know of (there might be a few...dunno), but you CAN set the rev LIGHT by using the black needle on the dash, just below the speedo.
