None what so ever. I did it all the time back in the late 60's and 70's. Most cars back then used some oil. In fact most owners manuals suggested that you check the oil at EACH fill up.

Chaz, any update? Switch to 10-40 castrol high mileage. This is what I added(non high mileage), but I dont see how 3/4 qt. could help 4 others, no oil is that great, but I'm interested in seeing what it will do for me. Maybe my dirtier oil is thicker. Hoping I reseated a ring or something, maybe god answered my prayers.

I'm at 92,xxx miles on my G, purchased at 28,xxx. I go 5,000 - 7,000 between oil changes. I replace the filter every time, and I use standard or syn-blend. Last few changes, I've been using the high-mileage formulations. I just changed the oil last night at almost 8,000 miles (family life is crazy), but I added just about a quart at 6,500 when I checked and found it about 1/3 of the way up on the hash-mark area between L and H on the dipstick. Really, if you're losing less than a quart every 3,000 miles on just about any gasoline engine, you're pretty good. Sure, a lot of motors don't lose any oil, but a lot of them do. A bit of loss is nothing to worry about. Start burning more than a quart every 1,000 miles, then it might worry me.
My wife's Pacifica has 93,xxx miles on it, and ever since I met her, I've been taking care of the maintenance on it. At that time, it was under 50,000 miles, but burning oil pretty fast. The last oil change she did before I took over was done at a Wal-Mart. They made her sign something before she left stating that she understood that when they drained the oil, there was something like less than a quart in there, and that was with around 4,000 miles since the last change. I just check her oil every few weeks and top it off. I change her oil every 6,000 - 8,000 miles, 5 quarts every time. In between, I add about another 5 quarts on average. Really, I only have to change her oil to get a new filter on there. I add oil so frequently that it should never really wear out- it burns off before it can lose it's performance. Until it starts going through 2 quarts / 1,000 miles, I wouldn't even bother considering repairs. Oil is cheap enough, as long as it's not fouling other components up, and so far it's not.

Oh, and I get hard on the engine a few times a day, including down-shifting frequently to use the engine to slow the car.. it keeps me and the car happy. When I drive my wife's Pacifica, I make sure to hit the throttle hard a few times, as well. She's hard on the brakes, but not the throttle, and her PCV and EGR valves get caked up with carbon and throw codes for slow response times. Getting on the throttle has proven to help break the crap up and clear the codes after a couple days of me driving it.
Don't be afraid to exercise the car, IMHO

My Grandma had a 1967 Buick Electra 225 (Duce and a quarter) and she told me to go get it washed. This was 1972 mind you. I did and on the way back, I did an "Italian tune-up" on it. That is, mash the **** out of the gas until it runs good. Clears out the carbon and crap.
Well, we got on Ocean Drive in Corpus Christi and I mashed the petal to the floor. The Wildcat 430ci 4bbl took off and we were doing 75-80mph in short order. Then I looked in the mirror. OMG! You couldn't see ANYTHING, just a cloud of black/red/brown smoke and soot behind us.
When I drove up and gave the keys to my Granny, she got in and just touched the starter and it settled into a smooth idle. She did that two more times and then asked, "what did you do?". I said, oh, just a quick tune up.

I went on a trip this weekend and checked the oil in my moms 4cyl 2010 Altima(QR25?). I had to add a little over 1/4 qt; basically the remainder of what I had put in my G at 1700 miles. Granted it was 5k in the oil, it was probably breaking down. I bet if you just started checking on some cars, you'd be surprised.

Yep, I see a light haze of smoke trailing behind the Pacifica the first time I get on the gas hard for several seconds (or more like 10 seconds, since that thing is one slow pig). But only if I haven't driven in a couple weeks. Any other time- even if it's sat for a few days, a few hours, or when the engine is warm- I don't see any smoking, so I'm assuming it's blowing out some build-up as opposed to burning oil.. I mean, I know it's burning oil, just not to the degree of visibly exiting the exhaust.

I know this is an old thread but I was reading through it and noticed a lot of people say "you drive the **** out of it?!" Why are you surprised? Its a sports car! What else would I do with it? I wouldn't drive it like a grandma! If I wanted to drive slow I would have bought a little 4 cylinder not a sports car. /vent
