Its undesirable but the duration is so short to warrant work orworry.

But im going to have him take a stethoscope to see if thats the problem about the CVT sprocket. He also said its a common problem with the 1st Gen G35s to have this rattle / grinding noise on cold starts.
You are right?! I ran the noise after each shift thinking it was gonna go away, eventually I hit the breaks hard one time and the oil light blinked for a second. I was like... WTF just happened? I hit the breaks again on purpose and it did it again! So I'm thinking im low on oil, took it in and had an oil change... The winding noise DISAPPEARED?!

When I had my civic ek hatchback back in the days, oil was so used up an old that it eventually lost its viscosity and was like water. At the time, it did make a ticking noise similar to the wind up on the G upon cold shifts. So now I know to add/change oil exactly every 3,000 miles, so either you keep track or hear the howling/winding noise as a sign of low oil.

Low oil does all kinds of crazy things to the engine. When i first got my G with 70K miles, I had a "not good" sound in each gear after i put my first 4100 miles on the car and an oil change fixed it. CEL came on, the low oil light didn't. I invested in a floor jack and an oil catch pan and change it every 3K or less and it has never happened again. The G is not a budget minded car, nor should it be.

should be cheaper and ideal?

Cold Start-Up

I have a 2004 G coupe MT6 and same thing happens to me, only sometimes, split seconds on cold startup. Checked oil and was good. Will this harm engine long term

Check the starter mounting bolts for tightness. This is the most common reason for grinding noise.

some people are saying its a 1000 dollar repair and some are saying that its not a problem at all and happens with VQ engines. Should I be worried or not?

I just got a synthetic oil change and 1 day later I get the rattling noise on cold starts only. It goes away once I drive around a bit and the car is fully warmed up. Did the mechanic mess something up doing the oil change?

Double check fluid levels, if okay, then sound is normal. Use regular oil next time. Cold start rattle is due to the short lag for the timing chain tensioner to build up oil pressure.

Thanks!
I read that it can harm the engine to switch back to regular from synthetic?

My engine oil level looks good. So I don't have to change the tensioner? It would won't mess up the engine to leave it I hope.
