When i leave my car sit for about over 6 hours or over and crank it the next day I hear this loud crunching grinding noise coming from the engine area. the sound lasts for about a split second but can not be replicated until the car sits for a long time or over night and it only happens in park right after startup. This sound has been happening for alittle over 2 years or so. Its not the ABS, i know what sound that is,

All fluids have been replaced at 60k miles, oil change is every 4500 miles with Full synthetic. car drives fine and normal but the noise bothers and worries me


UPDATE - PROBLEM RESIDES in either the CVT GEAR (sprocket with 4 bolts) or Chain guide tensioner( chain rattle)

Sounds like the altinator. But it is strange that the sound goes away.
Have it checked out.

 

its the car testing ur ABS.. like a test i guess. check the manual and ull see its normal. your safe. theres many threads about this

 

same when i start up my car and put it in gear go about 12 feet and it makes a quick grinding noise coming from the engine also.

 

Anytime you put the car in gear immediately after starting, the ABS system does a self test. Its audible from inside the car and you should feel a minor vibration in the brake pedal that only lasts a second.

Ah I thought it was my trans!! I had narrowed it down to do with something coming out of reverse, which I guess is most of the time I parked. Good to read this.

 

no its not the ABS self check i now what sound that is, this sound happens right after i crank the engine and still in park. the ABS i describe as a fart noise sort of but this is like a grinding metal noise.

 

and you said it's been doing it for 2 years now? if it was "a grinding metal noise", you would have had some sort of bad thing happen by now.

it's the ABS.

 

It's your VTC gear. I'm 100% sure. That's the diagnosis, car must be cold soaked to replicate the sound, grinding noise for a second or less upon start.

 

I have the same grinding noise on cold start, and it is not the ABS I am very familiar with that sound. Maybe somebody can help us figure out what the noise is.

I think I have heard a noise as well, but I have always thought it was the A/C compressor. Have you noticed if the A/C is on when cold starting?

 

VTC gear ? please explain more, And again its not the ABS.ABS happens after i start driving like a couple feet and i hear that depressing fart noise. This noise happens right after startup maybe like 2 secs tops.
