A/C System

I have noticed my A/C system doing things on its own!

Normally I just leave my dash vents "on" with manual low fan speed and outside airflow selected.

1). When I got into my car recently and started the engine, the A/C came on in the normal A/C mode with air recirculation and the rear defroster was on also??? How did all that happen all by itself?? Only happened that one time so far.

2). I have noticed that when I do have the A/C turned on in the "auto mode" the fan speed always stays the same. I thought the fan speed was supposed to self adjust as the car cooled. At least that is how my other cars work.

Anyone experience any of this??

Re: A/C System

Actually, I keep it on 70 degrees! It just seemed weird that it would change by itself from "manual mode" to "auto mode," "a/c on," "recirculate", and "rear defrost on" all by itself!

I have also now noticed that even if I hit the "off button" either the outside air source remains lit, or the recirculate remains lit at all times. Is that normal???

Re: A/C System

Mine seems to have a life of it's own. Either that, or it's haunted.

I've seen the lights on the panel flicker, I've seen it change modes right before my eyes when I didn't hit anything, one day I can set it so that the air is directed through the floor and dash vents with A/C on or off, the next day it'll only let me do it with the A/C on... there's a lot of other things too, but I can't think of them offhand.

I haven't had the dealer check it out yet, but intend to if it gets any worse... right now it's just a minor annoyance and part of the car's "personality". But if it gets to the point that I can't have the system work the way I want it to (or it's supposed to), I'll be taking it straight to the dealer.

Very quirky system though... I'd wondered if anyone else was having little problems like that too. Still, the A/C when you need it is KILLER strong - it'll turn that interior into an icebox in a hurry! The heat is equally good.

Re: A/C System

Does A/C really waste gas?

Sorry, if it's a stupid question, I'm kinda young.

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people that ask stupid questions. Sorry I just had to say it

As for the question, on a powerful V6 you won't notice much difference in fuel economy with the A/C on, you'll probably lose half a MPG. On a 4 banger it's noticeable by about a couple of MPGs though.

Re: A/C System

It sucks some power from the engine to run the compressor, too. But then again.. on a powerful V6, you won't notice.

Re: A/C System

yeah thanks. i thought i was crazy. My a/c went on automatically, and when i tried to turn it off and on to the heat it wouldn't work. Now i'm having problems with my indash 6 . I have to take it in to the dealer now... I wanna just rip out that dash and make something custom.

Re: A/C System

Mine A/C is possed too. Not huge problems just little anoyances. It seems like it never remembers my settings previous to the last time the car was shut off. Or sometimes it will randomly change to outside air or the fan speed will not change even though it's on auto and it's subzero cold inside it keeps blowin full blast. I got tired of it so I just started using manual mode. I'm so tired of taking this car in for stupid little things I just wanted to drive it for a while. Sheesh!
