Oh No, Too Many Revs
Oh No, Too Many Revs
Well, my G has 300 miles on it and I was at a stop light and noticed that my right side mirror was bent in a little bit from parking the car the night before. So I lean over to push it back out and my foot accidentally hit the gas and I didn't know it until it had reached 6000 rpm's. (good thing my car is a 6MT). Did I just damage the car because it is not broken in
It'll be fine - I doubt you damaged anything. That's what rev limiters are there for.
The worst thing you can do is lug an engine during break in, which is kind of the opposite of what you did - lugging involves using too high of a gear with a large engine load at low RPM's - like going up a steep hill in 6th gear at 1,200 RPM's while flooring it.
While you generally want to avoid high RPM's during break in, a quick run up to 6k one time with no load isn't going to really harm anything.

I think there is way too much emphasis placed on potentially "damaging" a car during the "break-in period". There is no way in the world that simply revving an engine during the break in is going to hurt a new car.
Break in periods had to be adhered to much more strictly in days past when engines were looser and really did have to bed themselves in somewhat.
While I whole-heartedly agree that anything new should be given time to "break in" if possible, I would not worry one bit about your car.

Whew, thanks for the info. I knew that I was over reacting. I never really full heartedly believed that reving your new car a few times could damage it. But once I did it myself, I felt a tear roll down my cheak...
