Intermittent Starting Issue
Intermittent Starting Issue
So I have a 6mt 2006 coupe and for the last couple of weeks it has been occasionally giving me a weird noise when trying to start and the motor doesn't seem to turn over at all. Now normally it only does it once, then it starts perfectly fine, but last night it did it to me three times in a row, by the fourth attempt I was pretty nervous. Now this doesn't happen very often, maybe once a week or so, but it also seems like it's happening more and more often as time goes on. As for the noise, it sounds like the noise the car makes if you try to start it without the clutch pedal depressed. Or if anyone has ever forgotten their car was on and turned the key again, THAT noise. The car has a lightweight flywheel, aftermarket clutch, and Stillen headers on it, but other than that the motor is more or less stock. Has anyone experienced this before? I searched but didn't find anyone with this exact starting issue.
So just a summary incase I was unclear:
Turn the ignition, car makes the described noise, doesn't turn over, and obviously doesn't start. Try again and normally it starts just fine.
Any advice would be appreciated!

So you said that it makes a sound similar to what happens if you try to start the car while it's already running? If so... you mean like a grinding, high pitched sound?
If that's the case, you need to either replace your starter or flywheel. The teeth on one or both of them are chipped, worn or some might be missing. Better fix this soon.... because worn teeth on the starter can quickly lead to needing a new flywheel and that's not cheap.
