I trust my Hemotologist who is helping to get through my Multiple Myloma. And I trust the Dr who performed my bone biopsy yesterday. I also trust my dealer to change my oil, for the last 5 years. I don't trust my PM, my Premier, or most politicians.

Peeaacce.
Its all good man.

Just wanted to be sure we're all on the same page here. Doing your own maintenance or any other DIY is great, as we all know. But its not always possible for whatever reasons or excuses we possess. I admit I'm too damn lazy to change the oil on my G35, so I take it to the dealership and pay $60 while I sit in the nice air-conditioned lobby eating free cookies and reading a magazine, instead of working on it myself outside in the heat, getting all dirty and sweaty. (sidenote: I change my sportbike and sedan's oil, just not the G).

Story time:
A while back, I had riding buddy who did his oil change on this Suzuki sportbike. After draining the oil and changing the filter, he gets a call from one of his friends to go riding. He forgets to add oil to his motorcycle and proceeds to ride off to meet his friend. Guess what, a few minutes into the ride his engine blows due to lack of oil. I still kinda laugh at him to this day for that.

So to your point even the do it yourself guys can forget ... We are all human... When I do the oil on the bike (Kawasaki ZX10R) I have a pit pass... With my local Kawi dealer. It cover all my schedule maintanece. And most it not all major repair.... It's just for convenience.. When it's nice out I want to ride not work on the bike.. Now all my mods I done my self...

Most guys I know do it because it's a greasy mindless job and oil disposal can be a nuisance. It's like hiring an accountant to take care of your taxes.

I primarily do it so that I can have the proper maintaneence records. I do personally swap out the oil early after periods of prolonged abuse and generally find the drain plug way over torqued though, so I do advocate doing the work yourself whenever reasonable.

Same here, having maintenance records from the dealer is the main reason. Not that I can't do it. I have 3 vehicles, and I do the oil change on the other two. The Infiniti is a luxury car for a reason. I paid $50 for the last oil change, not bad for about 7months interval.

Ever try changing the oil in 100-degree heat with no shade???

This is one of the reasons I gotta do it myself. Shop guys overtightening the filter and drain plug (not to mention the horror stories I've been told by friends of mine who have worked at these places) drives me nuts. I'm just an "if you want something done right, you do it yourself" kind of guy.

As I mentioned (horror stories), my buddies have told me about techs who will drain oil and then start your car with no oil in it just to eff with you (if you're a difficult customer). I'm not a difficult person at all, but I can't take that chance.

Agreed!

I've changed my oil many times, and it takes me 20 just to get the lugs broken loose and the first wheel off the ground safely. I change my own when I have the time, and take it to a mechanic I trust when I don't have time.

Lugs broken loose? You're doing it wrong.

Why are you taking lugs off to change oil?

Doh. Because I'm not thinking clearly, and I usually time oil changes when I swap from summer to winter wheels. Clearly, I'm breaking the lug nuts loose, not the lugs, when I do this.

When I do change only my oil, it's probably ten min for me to get everything out and ready an to get the jack stand(s) under the car. Add another 10 to get that darn plastic plate off the underside.

I don't even use jack stands, I just use the scissor jack from the trunk and never put my head under the car.
