Brake Quote......

The dealer quoted me $611 to change the front brakes with OEM pads and rotors. I think I'm going to buy ceramic pads and have them install them instead of OEM. What would you do. See Poll.

If you're mechanically inclined at all and have the proper equipment (i.e. jack, jackstands, torque wrench etc.) it's really not that hard to do it yourself. I changed mine just using the instructions here and on the other G sites -- and if I could do it, I imagine most people could.

That being said, your brakes are a critically important safety feature, so if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, don't.

Oh, and $611 -- are you out of the brake warranty period?

Yes I am, 39,000 miles.

I did brakes many years ago, but with todays technology I'm a little afraid. I was looking at tire rack and they said their rotors where not for cars with ABS/VCD. That being said, I am afraid of losing my VCD.....and the VCD has saved me many-a-times here in chicago.

I guess I will have the mechanic that takes car of my ford truck quote me a price.

Changing your own brakes will not affect ABS nor VDC.

Sandman is right. I've changed the brakes in my Maxima a couple of times. So easy it's kind of sick to pay what the service dept charges. BTW, what other G sites will give maintenance instructions?

I changed the pads in my 6MT using Malx's instructional video (thanx man...u rock). Took me about 2 hours in total and 1.5 hours of that was jacking up the car and removing/installing the tires. This was an incredibily easy job and would never pay the dealer to do it.

Can you give me a link to the video? I can't seem to find it here thru the search. Thanks.
