Exhaust Tone

I recently purchased a 2003 Nissan Skyline, Japan (Infiniti G35). The car is stock to my knowledge (except for TEIN Suspension and DVD Player). The one thing I notice is that the exhaust note/tone is not like all of the G35. I find my car is very quiet. Does anyone have any experience with this?

From a performance standpoint the car feels very quick and reacts how I would expect. I had 97 TT Supra with some basic upgrades and the car feels to be similar in terms of power output.

I'll try to post a sound clip tomorrow.

While the coupe's stock exhaust is super sexy it's pretty quiet. The sedan's is almost silent in comparison. Are you comparing the sound of yours against cars you have heard in person?

It's one of the best sounding stock exhaust I've heard.

Yes, and all that I've heard on youtube. It's not the loudness that I'm after but more that tone.

Below is what I'm referring to. I forgot to mention that mine is also an automatic, not sure if that makes a difference?

That Supra must've been dogged or VERY high milage, the G is quick enough but I don't think I'd ever call a stock G fast. My "typical bolt-on" 6speed 5.5gen Maxima felt quicker than my low milage G with Injen CAI and Borla Cat back.

But the car looks to be in pretty good condition, enjoy it! I never get tired of the rear 3/4 shot- one of the best in recent automotive history.

Maybe it's my "old age". Maybe the 3.5 vs 3.0 is what I'm referring to as the power feels more instantaneous. Even though the jdm supra had ceramic turbo impellers which made the spool a bit faster once I'm at about 30 or so in the 350 I can get to 80+pretty quick.

I wouldn't call it a fast car but at this point I'm not even interested in getting an exhaust or intake. My supra had intake exhaust intercooler upgrade and ran open boost from 60+ mph.

What I'm not "happy" with is the exhaust tone. I don't have that sound that I find on the American g35. I'm wondering if it's something in the stock exhaust in Japan that is causing it? If an aftermarket exhaust will give me the sound then I may purchase one. Are tou familiar with the exhausts? As for now I may add a subwoofer and replace speakers and put on some rims.

I also need an actuator for the door....

Car is an 03 with about 184k Klm. Came with tein coilovers and pioneer DVD deck which is what sold me. My initial purchases would've been those so I save the time and money. Plus it was only brought to the island in Nov last year.

A vehicles "Tone" depends on the head design! Only thing that changes is how loud it is depending on the exhaust system. Even with my HKS exhaust and Magnflow x-pipe that blends the volume from each bank, at start up it still sounds very much like your VQ motor...until I add a few RPMs!

Gary,
Thanks, so would it be safe to say then that there is some difference between the head design on the US and JDM? There are a mix of G35 and 350GT here and all of the G35's I've heard have that nice tone, even down the Infiniti Q35 I think it is (the 5 seater SUV). Granted I can say I've heard another 350GT up close all of the G35's definitely carry the same tone and none were upgraded performance wise.

If I'm able to get that tone/sound I think I'll be set in terms of "performance" mods. Not looking to go crazy, just want a reliable car for the next 10years.

Honestly, not sure if there's a difference between US and JDM heads? There may be due to all our air restrictions? It is possible to have a very reliable ride with a few mods like z-tube/cold air intakes, plenum spacer and exhaust! Do a Search on all three subjects, it's been discussed forever on Driver.

Gary,
Based on my video, do you have any suggestions on getting the tone? Based on your comment Even with my HKS exhaust and Magnflow x-pipe that blends the volume from each bank, at start up it still sounds very much like your VQ motor
Are you saying that your G35 sounds as quiet as mine? Also I'm assuming that you are in the US and have a G35 as opposed to the Nissan 350GT? Every G35 that I've heard sounds like the video that I posted.

I'm open to getting an exhaust, but if it will really only provide looks and minimal performance gains I'll probably wait a while.

It will only give looks and minimal performance gains unless you're pretty modified and tuned and a different tone of course..

Does your Skyline 350GT have the same resonator design in the exhaust flow like the American G35's and 350Z's have?

It sounds like a G35 but without some of the throatyness that the American versions have. Possibly a larger resonator or more restrictive muffler setup comes stock on the JDM cars?
