Tough it up man, it cant be worse then NYC lol! Anyway man, go for the 6spd, you wont regret it!
It depends on what you want for yourself. I would learn to drive a standard before you buy the car and then you will have a better idea of what you like to drive (auto or stick) since you'll likely live with it for a number of years. You could even go rent a standard for a weekend or a week and you'll be good to go. It's not hard to learn but you may not want or like to have to shift all the time. That's especially true if you have to drive in a lot of stop and go traffic every day. That's when the standard is a pain in the butt with all the clutching. Otherwise driving a standard is more fun and rewarding especially in a car like the G.
I learned how to drive a motorcycle (including driving and shifting) in one night for about two hours the day before going on a 1000 mile trip, so that was a lot harder than a car. I'm a couple of months shy of 30 years experience driving a standard.
The G is bit more difficult starting from rest than an average manual because the clutch engagement is more sensitive to your input. Shifting is first rate though with short throws. You shouldn't have any problem learning in 3-4 weeks easily if that's what you decide. The first while is awkward and intimidating but in short order it becomes second nature and you don't think at all about shifting.
Good luck whatever you decide and enjoy your G.

ask the dealer to let you test drive a manual and tell them you're not so good with it and then decide afterwards. ask the salesman to give you a lesson. trust me you'll love it. stop signs and traffic lights aren't a big issue with manual. its bumper to bumper traffic that gets you.
There is not all that much you can really do to destroy a manual transmission when learning to drive a stick. Even the clutch would needs some serious ride time to destroy. Try not to base your decision on simply your first drive of a manual. You will struggle with it at first and may seem to be a pain in the ***. The real question is whether or not you will enjoy it on the road and/or whther or not it will become cumbersome to drive around in.
Personally, I hate automatics. I feel very disconnected in them. The delay in downshifts, the way you can't floor it in a higher gear and just stay in the gear without a kickdown, the way engine braking seems to be non-existant, etc. I don't mind the clutch and shifter one bit, but that's probably because I enjoy rowing through the gears often. Not to mention the sounds of the engine as I accellerate through the gears and the blips of throttle as I heel-toe as I am slowing down.

Get the manual. It is much more rewarding to drive when you get the chance to open it up on twisty roads or tracks.
I'm sure you have a friend w/ a manual. Ask to practice stick on his/her car, in exchange for some seat time in your G35 6MT...it's only fair.

Look, face the facts: Noone I know of has picked the 6MT and regretted it. There are however MANY people on this forum who have actually traded in their Auto G's for 6MT's. Don't make the mistake. You're buying a sports car, don't be a Sally.

I drove a stick from 85-93. It's a blast. Once you really learn well, you can practice getting that little burn in second gear. Everyone can't do that. Downshifting is cool too. As I got older, it's less fun. Traffic in S. Florida is so congested now it's no fun to shift every block. And don't try to shift while you're on the cell. Today's cars offer a compromise with the steptronicshifting or whatever each manufacturer calls it. It's not as fun as having the clutch but you still get to hold that shifter in your hand and jerk it. Pun intended.
Bottom line is don't let other prople tell you what to do. Your friends who want you to follow the crowd should buy the car for you or take a hike. Real friends give opinions...not convince them them follow.
I had only driven a manual a few times before the G35. I live in Houston, tons of lights, tons of traffic. 3rd day I was driving around, albiet slightly lurchy. After a week I was doing fine, traffic doesn't bother me as I don't mind shifting and using the clutch. I think if you want to get this car in a auto cause of traffic, save yourself the money and get a Maxima. Auto transmission is like a handicap on a car like this.
