Wow, I change mine ( clean ) every 5000 miles. You should change it around 10,000. I guarantee you'll notice better gas mileage and feel a little more power not that you replaced it.

Its hard to beleive the filter got that dirty in just 16k, do you live or drive a lot in the city? I changed the filter in my 2004 maxima at 30k and it didn't look half that dirty. I only have 1000 miles or so on my go so I have a ways to go before changing it.

Wow, that seems awfully dirty for 16k miles. Where do you live? Dusty places like the southwest would get dirtier faster.

I m at 21k and I havent replaced mine yet so it must definitely look worse than that. I actually just purchased the K&N drop in and will be adding a Z-tube soon, so I'll see how that works out.

Get a k&n filter and just clean it as often as you want...it will breathe better and be WAY cheaper in the long run.

WOW. That is def not the average OEM filter lifespan. Any idea what caused it to get so dirty, so fast? Drive by a lot of coal?

As for the color difference; it's possible you bought a dry filter this time, and the old was was wet (aka oiled).

*edit*
This is the Nismo Dry air filter element, looks like a similar color

mine was so black dirt started falling off the filter as soon as i pulled it out at 15k miles.
i have a k&n now, and it'll be checked every 5k miles. well worth the time.

My original filter was red color as well, I think the replacement filters are all the yellow/white....I've replaced mine twice so far......

I change mine out every 10-12,000 miles. They weren't as bad as yours though......I drive the GSP 90 miles every day. Lots of salt/sand dust during the winter months unfortunately......

Question

Where do you buy your K&N Filter (drop in)?

I want to change my own air filter when the time comes. It's a little over 3,500 miles now.

I wasn't sure but now I'm convinced... Had my air filter changed last month at 21,000 miles- the book says it should last longer than that. Anyway, I stepped on the gas and felt noticeably faster engine response and acceleration. Thinking about it, any performance drop-off would be gradual as the filter got dirtier, so it would be hard to notice. But going from filthy to new would be noticeable- and it was. For sure I'm going to change it at 10k miles from now on. All you guys past 10-15k miles on your filter- change it now!! You'll be glad you did, especially if you live in a fairly polluted urban area (like me here in NY).
