P0442 EVAP control system how to fix??
New to the forum so not sure if this question has been previously answered but my “service engine soon” light turned on and when I further read into this error code I only found that the problem could be a leaky gas cap or a faulty EVAP canister vent. The prices in both aren’t too crazy but I don’t want to spend 70$ on a vent and it turns out to be just a leaky gas cap or visa versa. Anyone have this problem? the error code is P0442
If you want to be absolutely sure, you've gotta get an EVAP smoke test where they hook up a smoke machine to your EVAP system and wait to see where smoke is coming out.
Luckily, this won't affect anything else, so you don't need to be in a rush. Also, in CA you can even pass smog with it by removing your negative battery cable for a few minutes (to reset your CEL), then drive around for about 25-40 miles and go to the smog station. Smog stations don't test for EVAP leaks on OBDII cars. I know this because my other car has a similar code, but it's the fuel pump/gas tank gasket and I quite frankly don't want to drop my gas tank, and it otherwise doesn't affect anything.
