Annoying Rattle Sound
Annoying Rattle Sound
Hey guys new to the forum and g ownership. So I just got a 06 g35 coupe and was running fine until last week. It’s now making this rattling noise between 2000-3000 rpm regardless if I’m actually accelerating or just coasting. I sat in the car and revved the engine and didn’t really hear anything. It’s also loudest in 1-3 gears. My first thought was maybe timing chain? But I’ve also seen a lot about heat shields? Any thoughts on what the issue might be???

Checking for a loose heat shield or missing bolt is pretty easy if you have ramps or jack AND stands (because you don't want this heavy car on top of you). Just let the exhaust cool, lift and examine the length of the exhaust (specifically the Cats and Ypipe) that has shields on it. Use your hand to tap/jiggle things along the exhaust. It may also help to have someone with you to start the car/rev slightly in neutral to see if you can hear the vibration while an ear is under the car.
Originally I was thinking heat shield or worst case scenario a timing chain ( had a 04 Audi years ago that made the same sound and ended up being the timing chain)
however i I just got an oil change and the sound has completely gone away (for now) so either the previous owner hadn’t done an oil change in a minute; or he saw something loose and took care of it.
