Clicking Noise When Braking
Hi,
My car is a 2006 G35 6mt coupe with the base package. For the past year or so, I have had a clicking noise while breaking that I cannot figure out. I have checked all of the forums but cannot find anyone with the same issue. The noise only happens when the brake pedal is depressed about 1/2-2/3 of the way in. It goes away when the pedal is fully depressed. Also, the noise seems to happen in time with the rotation of the wheel. Thus, as I slow down, the time between the noise slows down. The noise also happens while turning and braking, and also while braking in reverse. It does not seem to affect performance and the car does not rattle when braking, but it is very annoying.
I have attached a video where you can here the clicking as I brake.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

@Scorpi0 , would a bent heat shield only make noise at one point in the rotation though?
@cleric670@gmail , it makes a reasonably loud click, once per rotation, and then as the car comes to a complete stop, it makes the final click in a drawn out creaking sound.

Is it coming from a wheel or somewhere else tho? That is loud enough to be obvious where its coming from. If its a wheel, put it up in the air and spin it.
My guess is a failed wheel bearing, get it up in the air and it should be pretty obvious what the issue is.

Sorry to grave dig, but this is exactly the sound my 03 sedan started making after I put in spl endlinks. But they were not the culprit and it was just a weird coincidence, as the noise remained after I drove with the endlinks disconnected. The only part of the driver side I haven't replaced yet is the lower control arm ball joint and the wheel bearing. (New: SPL FUCAS, lca bushing, compression arm, and tie rods + I just swapped the struts and springs today. And all the bolts are tight.)
Happens exactly as OP described. Starts making that creaking/clicking noise as you gently apply the brakes. I say creaking cause it almost sounds like something is moving back and forth with the rotation of the wheel. So as you slow, the sound starts slowing and vice versa. OP if you still on the forum, ever find out what it was? Could use some more eyes and ears on this thread.
Thinking about it, the driver side also sometimes clunks with bumps. Which probably further supports that it is likely the lower control arm ball joint eh? Or that could be a separate issue entirely ofc.
I actually have a set of the ball joints ready to be installed so I guess I'll do that and report back for the people of the future that end up with this issue
Also, another thing worth mentioning is that sometimes after not having driven the car in a bit, the noise won't be immediately there but then returns after a couple kms of driving.
Maybe the brake caliper pins need lubing?
As I'm typing and thinking this through, though the compression arm is new, maybe the bushing is binding as the suspension weight moves to the front when braking- this makes the most sense in terms of how that noise could be getting produced, the way it's almost a creak that occurs with the shifting weight during braking. (For the same reason I thought it might be my new eibach sway bar bushings, but I relubed em and retorqued, and no change)
And I do recall having to put a lot of effort in getting the compression arm to sit in the lca, so I likely introduced hella preload?
On second thought, it's still way too much more of a click then a creak to be that bushing. LCA ball joint is contender number 1 still. Especially cause of the clunking and just for that fact its one of the two last things to replace.

I had the same issue on my 07, driver side front was making that noise and after replacing the hub, it's quiet..
When a front wheel bearing is going bad, the ***** inside are most likely dry and will rub out a groove in the bearing race so when you apply force to that bearing, it will let you know that it's pretty much done. You can raise the wheel off the ground, spin it and it might sound quiet BUT, apply 3,000 lbs to it and it will make noise.
That noise can also manifest itself with a cracked rotor and i mean cracked so when it rotates over the pad, it scrapes it. The heat shield rubbing could also make that noise but it would need to be a really badly warped rotor for that to happen.. Many might say tires, rims, ball joints and even radio speaker static.. But i bet it's a wheel bearing..
