Faced an 05 Mustang GT!!!

I had the opportunity yesterday to go up against one of the new Mustang GTs. I have to admit... They go pretty fast. First off, I must say that I am running in a stock 2004 6MT. At the time, I had the anit-slip turned off.

This is for all of you that are either wondering what an 05 GT can do against a stock G35. Don't know if he had a manual or automatic.

OK... Here is what happened!

I was at a light when a stock silver 2005 Mustang GT pulls up next to me. He looks over at me and revs his engine... I guess it was supposed to be some intimidating gesture. No Fear Here! Now I am not the type to get too crazy on public streets, but in that situation, what is a man to do?

The light turns green... we both went for it. I pulled hard in first gear taking him by about 1/2 car length. His front end was at my door. I clearly took the jump on him out of the hole. I hit second gear, the rear tires explode with a bark, and I surged another 1/5 car length on him. At this point, the nose of his car was at my rear passenger tire. I looked over my shoulder and saw him giving it everything it had. Once I hit third gear, he started to gain on me. I looked down and saw I was just passing somewhere around 60MPH when he started his gain. As I was climbing through the RPM range of 3rd gear, he slowly caught me. Before I needed to hit 4th, his car pulled ahead of me where my nose was at his back tire. Those cars have great 3rd gear punch I now understand. We both backed off approaching 85 knowing he was taking me.

When we got to the next light, to my suprise, he rolls down the window and sais to me. "What the F**k kind of car is that? I clearly thought I was goign to bury you!" I told him it was an Infiniti G35 and he couldn't beleive it. Goes to show that some believe our cars only LOOK nice. NO! They can run too.

So, we were at the next light and away we went again. Just like the first run, I took him out of the hole, left him in both first and second by atleast a car's length and again... Just like before, just after hitting 3rd gear, he slowly starts catching back up to me and then slowly walks by me. Those GTs continue to pull up through 85-90mph. When they finally take a full car lead on ya!

I never expected to beat the 05 GT based on the numbers I read. But it was good to see what an honest duel against one of those cars is like.
Again, I am a proud owner and I am definitly going to mod a bit so the next time I am put into that situation, the results will be different.

Be prepared for the public shaming you will receieve for your street racing/driving recklessly/etc. story. - but since I was deciding between a 05 mustang and a G myself before my G purchase - great read.

Lets all be honest here. If you can honestly say that you have NEVER driven 85mph on a public street, especially in a G35, THEN YOU ARE A LIAR!

Nice

Crazy,
Good story. Thanks for the good write-up. Now I know to just pick on Mustangs light-to-light!

And you're right....85mph is fun, especially in a G. And I think I know someone in my city who owns a CB G35C that typically runs triple digits almost daily on his way to work with the protection of his V1.

Good read.

Wonder if it was an auto or manual?

It's all fun and games until we kill or maim somebody. Never say never (I'm a great driver - it'll never happen to me, the roads were empty - I never see traffic at that time of day, I never saw them coming, no one ever steps off that curb, that kid never rides his bicycle there, etc etc etc). I hate to be the race-police but WTF? Any of us would be ready to kill any idiot that took out our loved ones over a street race or drunk driving or inattention behind the wheel or talking on their cell or whatever.. True? What makes it different when we're behind the wheel and the race-shoe is on the other foot?

Next time someone thinks about racing on a public street, they should imagine their wife or sister or daughter or son or dad or mom or whoever they hold dear stepping off a curb or going through an intersection or whatever the circumstances dictate and getting wasted by someone who let their ego or testosterone or mods get the better of them. If they still do it, they've made a choice and deserve what they get, whatever that may be.

Sorry I'm coming unglued over here but like many I've seen friends and even family killed by drunks or careless fools who don't think their actions have consequences. It may not happen today or tomorrow but if racers/drunks/fools keep at it eventually someone is going to pay for their entertainment.

I used to be a nut behind the wheel until I started to figure out that the rules that govern the road are written in blood - generally it took someone getting killed to emphasize a point. Those days came to an end years and years ago for me. Judging by the ages I see discussed here I'm probably at the upper end of the age (42) scale and that's okay - I've had more time to appreciate fine cars .

The numbers in the magazine should tell us everything we need to know. If we need proof, we should set the example and go to the track.

Running 85-90 on the Interstate is a lot different than 65 in a 45 or 80 in a 50 or whatever. Many times running slower on the Interstate creates more of a hazard than driving faster does. That isn't true on accessible roadways. As much as we all claim to love cars and what they can do I find it hard to believe we don't know that.

Go easy gents - you'll get there.

I have my proximity suit on. Standing by to be flamed.

lol, why we say this all the time is kinda funny to me, but this is the G board, so it makes sense.

the 05 mustang has recieved great reviews for overall value, and I am sure that because the mustang doesnt have HID's or automatic off headlights etc..I am sure the owner wont miss it for the fun factor of that car. Because its not in the luxury department, the Mustang GT is nothing to sleep on. Very nice car.

Interesting story...

So, in other words, don't fear a non-GT '05 stang at all?
And with some mods, maybe That 3rd gear pull will go away, and you'll hold onto that lead
