Are you sure about this one? IIRC, with an eletronic throttle, the amount of actual throttle opening will only be as much gas as the engine can use, so the lower RPMs will yield increased economy over part throttle high RPM driving.

I've had my 2005 6MT for a week now and have been driving it more than I would usually drive so that I can get it past the break in point quicker. So far after 1 tank of gas, it's getting about 21 mpg. This is a 50/50 mix of city/hwy driving. I expect it to improve after break-in just like my '03 did.
The only way I could think of to get mine to average 12mpg would be to run around at 4k rpm all day long. Somethings not right if thats the best you get.

I'm sorta getting pretty poor MPG too.
Hmm... I'm getting about 16.2-16.9mpg according to my Nav.
I reset the ECU this weekend thinking that this was the source, but it's come back down to the current setting.
BTW, my car is about 2 weeks old from the dealer. When I got it, it had about 80 mi (was on the lot). I'm almost sure that that the test drives did not follow break-in procedure, but these engines are tested at high RPMS at the factory, so this shouldn't be the cause.
I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens. Could also be the gas from the dealer, my last 2 tanks were from them lol.

pointman: There is no way that 12 mpg is acceptable. How is the car running....is it sluggish, unresponsive, etc.? I would suspect something is 'pulling' your mileage down. Have you checked that your e-brake is adjusted correctly and not hanging up? Is your torque converter engaging and disengaging correctly?
Either one of these things can affect your mpg.

Your gas mileage is going to be affected probably most by the lock-up clutch which locks in at a higher speed.........making your AT more efficient.
I have a 6MT and am just relating things from my experiences with AT vehicles so I do not know how an AT G shifts and how it's rpm's drop at higher gears when the lock-up clutch loks in........however, does your car's rpm's drop after shifting into 5th?

I would check out another dealer or even just a local shop for a suggestion or two.
I have an 05 6MT, and on my first tank i got 24mpg. I have 1500 miles on her now and am getting regularly 21mpg with an even highway/city split in driving. If I was getting 12mpg I would be raising some serious questions at the dealer. I wouldnt accept the dealers explanation without getting some second opinions.
12mpg is a lot less than the average around here.
