Exactly... all about the setup. My '97 GT had no problem staying fired in 1st AND 2nd on a flat surface if you let the clutch out easy enough.... and could even do it in 3rd going down an incline.
It's no problem doing it in 1st on the G.

A couple of people did say all manual xmissions could do this and assuming that you and the Civic driver did not simply lack the experience or prerequisite skill, it would seem that you have corrected the notion that all manual transmission cars could do this.
How about we settle on "most" or "virtually all" cars can do this.
I've seen some trucks with low gears that would crawl up curbs and stuff while sitting in first. Like someone said earlier its all about the gearing.

Depending on the speed of the stop and go traffic, I sometimes just coast the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gearing. NICE!
I was actually taught to drive that way through traffic. Even second gear has a very wide range. You can go almost to zero in 2nd. What I generally do is leave a lot of room between me and the car in front of me and try to cruise at a constant speed. The gap usually gets wider and smaller as other cars speed up, then slow down to a stop, then speed up again. But usually I just cruise at 5-20 mph through traffic and end up switching gears very infrequently and actually stopping only once or twice . This doesn't work in really heavy traffic, though. Friday night rush hour by downtown LA, for example.

In my younger days I had a 55 chevy belair hardtop with a 427 cubic inch motor 4 speed m22 gear box and a 5.13:1 posi rear end. With that gearing and torque I could let the clutch out in 4th gear and the car would pull out with no problem, hell once i even started the car while it was in 4th gear with the clutch out and it scared the crap out of me. Torque is king and gearing is just another way of multiplying touque.
Remember horsepower does't make your car accelerate hard torque does.
