Sorry bud, but 10 years ago I had a 94 Infiniti G20 w/5sp manual. Guess what? If you were already rolling at 10mph and let off the accelerator it would stall once speed reduced to under 2-3mph. And this was on a brand new car at the time!

 

Sorrier guy, but 48 years ago when I learned to drive on my seven-year-old 1950 Ford it would not stall under the conditions you describe. Check the idle speed on your 94 G20.

That car is long gone, but idle speed was just fine. Same thing would happen on the C5 vette I had a couple of years ago.

So SORRIEST compadre, not EVERY car is made to do what the G35 and your 50' Ford can do.

Its all about torque and gearing. If you have enough torque and a low enough first gear any car can crawl through stop and go traffic in first with no gas.

 

Exactly... all about the setup. My '97 GT had no problem staying fired in 1st AND 2nd on a flat surface if you let the clutch out easy enough.... and could even do it in 3rd going down an incline.

It's no problem doing it in 1st on the G.

 

One guy with a Civic and you are the only two persons in this entire thread that report an inability to be able to do this. Some of us have had experience in driving many, many, cars with standard transmissions and have been able to do this on all cars they drove.

A couple of people did say all manual xmissions could do this and assuming that you and the Civic driver did not simply lack the experience or prerequisite skill, it would seem that you have corrected the notion that all manual transmission cars could do this.

How about we settle on "most" or "virtually all" cars can do this.

 

I've seen some trucks with low gears that would crawl up curbs and stuff while sitting in first. Like someone said earlier its all about the gearing.

Anyone ever do up shifting with out the clutch?

I've discovered this a while back.

I've also been able to coast 2nd and almost 3rd (almost).....on a slight inclined on-ramp!!

Depending on the speed of the stop and go traffic, I sometimes just coast the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gearing. NICE!

 

My 1995 Nissan Maxima did the same thing. When I first figured it out I was pretty suprised

 

I was actually taught to drive that way through traffic. Even second gear has a very wide range. You can go almost to zero in 2nd. What I generally do is leave a lot of room between me and the car in front of me and try to cruise at a constant speed. The gap usually gets wider and smaller as other cars speed up, then slow down to a stop, then speed up again. But usually I just cruise at 5-20 mph through traffic and end up switching gears very infrequently and actually stopping only once or twice . This doesn't work in really heavy traffic, though. Friday night rush hour by downtown LA, for example.

 

i agree with u saltidawg wholeheartedly. virtually any manual car can be started in first gear with just the clutch alone, no gas needed (i can do this on my wife's cooper s with ease). scapgf... no offense but u probably had problems with those cars (maybe u needed a tune-up) if u couldn't do what saltidawg proposed. fyi: i also used to own a c5... and there is no way that that beast would stall using the above tactics.

 

In my younger days I had a 55 chevy belair hardtop with a 427 cubic inch motor 4 speed m22 gear box and a 5.13:1 posi rear end. With that gearing and torque I could let the clutch out in 4th gear and the car would pull out with no problem, hell once i even started the car while it was in 4th gear with the clutch out and it scared the crap out of me. Torque is king and gearing is just another way of multiplying touque.
Remember horsepower does't make your car accelerate hard torque does.
