Someone talk me out of selling the G
Someone talk me out of selling the G
In the last few weeks, I've been feeling the urge to get rid of the car which I love so much. I am looking to buy a house this year and getting rid of the G would make sense. I am looking to get an Evo 8 new or used or a used STI.
I've had the car for 18 months and still owe around 29k. The KBB value of the car is around 31k. I also plan on selling the Volks which are 6 months old seperately for around $2,100. So speaking ever so simply...I potentially have around $4,000 as a downpayment for the next car...I am speaking and calculating conservatively here and am assuming on getting a good APR that would leave my new payments to be around $500 or so give or take a few saving me $200! (Yeah, I know...that's how much I pay a month for the car now!)
My dad's reasoning in this whole deal is this. I want to buy a car for $30k when I owe $29 on the G. Why would I drop the G 18 months into the 60 month term for $29k? Why not just refinance the G and keep a superior car? Is he right? Coz in my experience he's 99% right.
I do not want to get rid of the car and I will cry like a little girl when I hand those keys over to someone else but I need to save some dough.
So refinance or just sell it and get the Evo or STI? Thanks for your time and input...

Thats a first....I've seen the "convince me to buy one" threads but not this before. So here goes nothing....
Nooooooooooooo, please don't sell it. I beg you, you are making a mistake. You will regret it. This might be one of the biggest blunders in life you will ever fall into. I will give you 2 dollars not to sell it, please, do it for me...do it for the kids...think about the kids...I am sure you will make the right decision.
K, if that didn't convince you, then I don't know what will. But seriously, why should anyone have to convince you? You are human enough to make your own decisions right? Do what you want and what you feel is right or will be in your best interest while keeping you happy. No offense man but these convince me threads are lame, almost as lame as the "what color should I buy" threads...

If your gonna sell it to save money, then u would need to think lower in regards to what ur next car will be. Unless you could get those two cars you mention for a lot less, like 22K or so. Other then that, there is no point on getting rid of the car just to pick up another 30K car. Its gonna be the same payment amount, if not a lil more, cause your starting over with your 60 mths term, if dats the case again. Your dad is right, and it seem like he is now 100% correct with this one =).
I know this has flame potential but the voices in my head are confusing me...I just need some opinions outside my family or circle of friends who have no stake in this decision. I'm trying to rationalize this decision and by externalizing it onto a public forum for discussion, then I am alleviating some of that confusion.
In the end, this will have to be my decision and my decision only. I am merely asking for 3rd party opinions in a public forum.
Now for the real question...STI or Evo 8??? Just kidding...hehehehe...Or should I get the M3??? Bwahahaha...Leasing also crossed my mind...maybe some car below $20k.

My thoughts exactly...or else an M3 would never have been mentioned
I dunno Wu...I have obsessed over this car when the first concept pics came out and when I finally saw it in person, I got weak in the knees and short of breath. I've known of the Skyline since I was in my early teens when the R32 came out having JDM car nuts in the family and the next iterations only made me want a Skyline more although I know that the G is not the GT-R. I love how this car creates conversation and the looks it gets from people are priceless. I don't think that having an Evo or STI will evoke any of those reactions from anyone but car nuts. The universal appeal is great. The car is beautiful and I love it I love it I love it. It is the most beautiful car I have seen this side of MBZ 300SL gullwing (maybe I'm reaching there).
Jeez. I feel like I'm talking myself out of this now! HEHEHE...
The last line about the M3 was an ode to the famous posts of the past few weeks...joke only...

You'll end up with a fast car no matter what though
well i would look at other ways to save... if you've looked at all the other choices and the G is the only thing where you can potentially save, I would then compare selling the G to refinancing... what's your interest rate look like now? and how is your credit? will you be able to refinance with a decent interest rate also? I would estimate how much your monthly would be when you refinance... who knows it might not even make much of a difference...
Even then lets say you save $200 a month if you sell or refinance the G... is that going to be enough for your house? If its not then why even consider doing it right now... I would just wait til you've paid off the G and try to save as much as you can now. If you really want to get a house then you probably need to sell the G off and get a significantly lower priced car... either that or get a better job lol

It never turns out well to sell a car, get no equity out of it, and then buy another at the same price. The inconvenience and the taxes alone will make it not worth your time (unless you have a free loaner in the meantime).
Think about it--you are not in the driver's seat of this deal. You want to get rid of your car meaning that you may or may not get a good price for your car depending on how patient you are/how patient you can be. Then, you are trying to buy farily rare replacement cars that you may/may not get a godd deal on used.
In addition, have you thought about insurance? The insurance alone for the Evo will probably cancel out any savings on the car itself and that is just throwing away money period.
I find it hard to believe someone could go from a G to an Evo/Sti. I think you will miss the class and luxury of the G. I could see getting an Evo/Sti as a second car, but not to replace the G.
Not to mention the first time you see a modded Evo/Sti you may want to start dumping money into it for wheels, etc. and put yourslef even further in the hole.
Then again, I guess it also depends on how old you are and what your tastes are.
Good luck.

Considering an EVO or STI will probably drain your wallet faster than the G!
Spring is here! Give your G a good wash, shine those rims, row the windows down, open the moonroof, crank the music up, and go for a long cruise........I bet you will fall in love with your G all over again!
(if not, see a counselor
) Enjoy your ride!
You could probably find a way to save $200 per month if you looked at where every penny you spend goes. For example, since I barely ever watch TV, I'm going to dump my cable TV and save $45 per month.
If you want to save money, selling the G and then buying an STI or EVO won't do it. The insurance and taxes alone will make it cost you more. Not to mention those cars are pretty stripped down in options compared to the G so you will end up dumping even more in other stupid upgrades. Your dad's right; you might be able to squeeze some cash out with a refi, but I usually tell my friends to suck it up and live at home long enough to save a decent down payment, its not always the most pleasant (or an option in some cases), but it will make things a lot easier in the long term when you don't have to worry about large house payments. You could always buy an accord; that could save you some cash, but it doesn't sound like your the type of person that would do that given your car choices. Living in a house on your own is very expensive (I bought mine at age 22 by myself), and the fact that your thinking about selling your car to be able to do it is not a good sign; I would really watch your budget and start calculating all your expenses.
