Stupid Summer Tire Question
Stupid Summer Tire Question
Sorry if this is a ridiculous question...
How are the stock summer tires in 40 degree rainy weather?
I still have the Snows on right now, which i know is bad since its 60 degrees (oops), but at the same time in MI the weather in April is so screwy that there is still a chance of snow before spring is finally here to stay. So I'm kinda hesitant to take them off
Should I put the Summers on now even though it will probably be in the 50's and rainy during the days and between 30 and 40 at night?
I dont want to keep driving on the snows, but I have no idea how the summers will work in the cold rainy weather thats ahead. God I hope we've seen the last of the snow....
Any suggestions? thanks.

i'm in the same boat as you. still have my winter tires on even though it's fairly mild. i'm gonna wait it out until the end of next week and check the forecast... if the low's are still above freezing i'm having them swapped. considering past years... it's not uncommon to still get crappy cold and miserable weather up here until may.
I'm in Chicago. I would wait just a bit longer. This time of the year and late November are the worst times for guessing which tire to use. I actually got stranded on summers around the first snow of the season in November. I guess I miscalculated Mother Nature's intentions.
40 degrees and rainy is no problem.
That is about all we get down here in Arkansas... maybe one or two times a year at most we get 1-2" of snow, but mostly it's just rainy. Average winter lows are around 30 at the coldest, and 40 most days. I haven't ever had a problem driving on them at that temp. I tend to run corners pretty hard at times and haven't ever had the Pilots give up on me.

40 degrees and rainy should not be a problem. i have driven the pilot sports in sub-40 degree weather many many times, but i do NOT even TRY to drive the pilot sports on any kind of frozen precipitation - even if it's just a dusting of snow. when the temp gets below 40 degrees, the pilot sports get pretty squirly however. waay easier to break them loose and harder to get the tires up to temperature.
however, just for good measure i would wait until you are sure there will not be anymore snow or ice on the roads before changing to summer tires.
