Gear shifting feeling

For the past few weeks I have noticed a "rough" feeling when I shift the stick into 1st 2nd and 3rd. Sometimes it feels soft and normal, but other times it feels a little "grindy" like there are ridges where i'm shifting into the gear.

Could this be because of not shifting at the right time? Or could it be because I grineded my gears a handful of times when i first got my car?

This is my first stick car so I'm wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has experienced this.

If it's a grinding feeling then you either are not depressing the clutch enough or your syncros are bad.

If it's a single "bump" then drops into gear it's "normal," but you may want to have the dealer check and make sure the clutch alignment plate (don't know if this is the correct term, but I'm thinking the plate above the tranny and below the shift boot) isn't shifting a bit.

i think this is supposed to be a common problem that goes away with time. i had that same problem, but after about 1000 miles, it was gone.

Dude. I have 3,000 miles and it still isn't gone. Clutch is to the floor and still, I feels like I'm hitting a wall. Maybe if I took the boot off and look at whats inside? Has anyone done that? Maybe I'll ask the dealer first before doing so. I asked my friend that owns a 350Z and he has the same problem.

I'm guessing you went through the Q&A with everyone else? Did they give any feed back that we should know?

No, but from previous posts and my own previous experience with manuals which arent warmed up, it may be difficult to "pop" them into gear. Also, occasionally you arent going through the gate precisely...the gate is very narrow so its gotta be a perfect throw, so when you actually throw it, your not fully "in" that gear yet, but it catches your stick shift and thats why it may feel "grindy". Just not a smooth shift.

You're right. I just sat in my car right now and with the clutch all the way down, I slowly shifted. The outcome is what you said. It is very narrow. I did manage to pop it in without resistance and there was no feeling of hitting the wall. Thanks Gee!
