Would painting my car hurt my resale value?

If done right, you will not be able to tell a car has been repainted without taking apart or damaging the car. In many cases, it will be hard to prefectly mask everything so that overspray is perfectly eliminated. But if you are telling me a dealership will look that carefully, I will laugh. It's usually trhe sales manager that looks. The last two cars I traded in had minor body damage(unrepaired) , and they didn't even notice. For the most part, dealers really just look at whether or not they will be able to sell it themselves or if they will wholesale it out.
As far as value, it depends. If the paintjob is done well and correctly, then it should not. If you go to Maaco and have them paint it with one of their 'specials', then it likely will. Custom colors done well will likely increase the value(assuming it is a desirable color). Ivory Pearl is an available color...it would just seem like a waste to me.
And going back to dealers picking out the fact the car has new paint, you can easily argue that if they sell the car off their own lot, they aren't going to be selling the car for any less then they would if the paint was still original. In fact, if the whole car was repainted, I wouldn't be surprised if they boasted that it had a brand new paint job. Selling privately, you may run into a few people who are going to be nit-picky and not want the car, or want it for less, but if everything was done right, chances are, there will be buyers who will pay the market value of the vehicle. As long as tehre are, there is no change in value...
