Humm, I think you caught me there. While I'm pretty sure about AMG breaking in their engines, I asked a couple of Corvette owner about their C5 and didn't get a conclusive answer... I'm wondering if whoever told me about this was talking about ZR-1s... But anyway, you are right, Chevy does not break in their engine as part of the assembly process. I also looked up an FAQ from Mobil One and they said you can use Mobil One pretty much whenever you like. Hope this helps.

 

I'm going to Mobile 1 this week (2,500 miles) I would like to know if there are synthetic oils for the rear end and auto trans???

Sure is bro. I've used Redline oils for A/T and rear end. Gets a little pricey tho, when have to change out about 12 to 14 liters of oil in the tranny.
Check with you auto parts store for prices and availability. Be sure you get something compatible with our automatics.

Okay...back from the dealership and after consulting with the service manager, decided to stay with mineral-based until oil change number three.

He said that synthetic wasn't recommended until 7.5 K--according to the owner's manual. I'll have to revisit the manual and try to find it...I thought I had gone over it pretty thoroughly though.

And true enough according to the Mobil1 FAQs...whenever you want. I will go ahead and wait and do it according to the SM's recommendation.

Now, another issue is the filter itself....Mobil1 makes what appears to be an exceptionally good filter and my cousin uses it in his Denali P/U. Again, according to the Infiniti SM, I can use it if I choose. I never used it in my 3.5 Altima because the Nissan dealership would NOT install anything but a Nissan filter. Any opinions?

I am sure there are good after-market oil filters out there and maybe Mobil One is.

I do recall way long ago, however, that there was a test of about three aftermarket filters and Toyota's own. Toyota filter beat them all on filtration, longevity, and the most important criteria to me, the non-passing of particulate contaminants due to the others having some kind of a weak spring bypass valve. Don't ask me; I'm not an engineer but that convinced me that for a Toy the best fliter was their own.

I also had the same experience with the old RX7; checked the filter with a local racer and with a turbo conversion shop in Dallas at the time and they concurred--Mazda made the best filter up until you went to high output aftermarket turbo (taking a 105 hp engine and making it 250+).

Gist of my story is: it could be that Nissan/Infiniti filter is the best way to go until you can find some conclusive evidence to the contrary. If you do, plz share it with us!

1. PAO (Poly Alpha Olefin or something). Mobil 1, Amsoil, etc.

2. Hydrocracked Mineral Oil: Castrol Syntec.
