Question on MPG

Sup guys,

New to the board. Just got my 05 DG Coupe fully loaded two weeks ago. Been a blast since, only regret is not being able to push it abit. Driving like a granny so far. And my question to the board is this. How many of you guys see a substantial jump in your MPG after the 1,200 miles break-in period? I know this question has been presented to the board before and i have read the threads, but so far no one has commented on the correction of the low mpg problem directly(fixed by dealer) or indirectly(jump after break-in). I'm currently averaging 15mpg using 93 and that's low. I would be happy with averaging 20mpg, but 15mpg is just too low.

I have 500+ miles on the car now and I know I have to wait for the car to break in a bit. Just a bit paranoid on the car getting lousy mileage.

Thanks.

really depends on how much city vs highway, as well as your driving style.

You can certainly get 22- 26 average on the freeway so depending on the ratio of city to highway 20 isn't a problem (I can do it easily IF I KEEP MY FOOT OUT OF IT)

It will absolutely improve after break in, well 2 - 3k was where I really saw it get better.

Hey Sickone,

What was your initial mpg when you first got your car? I'm currently doing 50% hwy and 50% city. and how much was your improvement after the break-in?

i was only getting 18 - 19 on the freeway, now I get an easy 22- 23, and like 25 if I drive nice, so at leat a 20% improvement (at about 3k I changed to Mobile1 Synth oil as well, not sure if that helped, but it sure will help the engine last)

I am also driving an AT, so if you are driving an MT you'll do better than me.

I get 19.5mpg now and I just turned 12K. FIrst it seemed to be around 16 or so. I have added a K&N air filter though.

Yes, when I first my car...the Navi said 8 mpg!! So I assume since its fully loaded you are going by your Navi, in which case reset it and start it over.

Reset it when doing freeway driving to see how much your getting on the highway.

Reset it on the streets to see how your doing there.

If you reset it and do street driving, then jump on the freeway...then the average won't climb as high since street driving value is going to keep the TOTAL average low...

Also, before break in I was getting EXCELLENT mpg due to driving like a granny (shifting at 2-2.5K RPM)...now its eh...

My highway mpg: 24-26
My street is about 14-16
My combined street/freeway is about 19

3 months of ownership, 1760 miles

I drive through lots of traffic (stop and go ar!) around the Chicago freeway/city streets I get around 18.5 mpg with some agressive driving thrown in. If I granny drove I would suspect I would get around 20+ish but what fun is that? I have about 15k miles on the car. Your engine right now is pretty tight brand new. Keep regular oil in it until about 3k or 4k then put in synthetic and try some highway driving and I'm sure your mpg will be up to par.

You should see an increase in MPG after the following events;

Above 1k miles
Switch engine to synthetic oil (wait until after 1k)
Switch transmission and rear diff to synthetic gear oil (wait until after 1k)
Install a K&N air filter

I have 26k on my car, have full synth and a K&N and I see 22-23mpg in mixed driving and upwards of 26-27 on straight highway driving. Pure stop and go city traffic brings me down to 19-20 or so.

The effects of synthetic oil and a high end filter were the same on my last 2 cars.

Averaging 22 for the first 1050 miles. Will switch to synthetics and get a K&N filter as soon as break-in is complete. Hopefully today.

dropshadow - the current wisdom is to break the engine in before going to synthetic, a full synthetic reduces wear so much that it can make it hard to get the break in you want in the short break in period.

I run full synthetic in the Engin, and the Differential, but of course in my 5AT tranny I have the Nissan approved fluid.

I went to synthetic at like 3k, and the differential at like 8k
