I've seen a lot of drift cars with the same intercooler placement. I think it's because since they go sideways a lot, airflow does not come in through the bumper as it normally would when a car is mostly going straight. Angle-mounting the I/C would probably draw more air to it.

so does anyone know whats up with the intercooler? im assuming since you never get going that fast with drifting the front mount is kind of a waste? so having mounted like that is a shorter distance to the engine? but im no FI expert! i would like to know none the less

heat rises... mounting it like this would be the most optimal way to use the intercooler as a "heat sink" is supposed to be used!

this is my guess...

no
D1 cars always crash, and usually the intercooler goes too.

and this design is to use the vented hood like a vaccum and suck the hot air out of the intercooler, and the intercool wont block air flow to the radiator

Im surprised nobody has come up with the correct answer about the intercooler. Apparently nobody has ever seen a rx7 turbo setup. If you can picture the intercooler and radiator put together as a V, this is what it looks like. It is for equal air flow to the intercooler and radiator, as opposed to the intercooler blocking the radiator.
