I've read in another thread that certain gas companies either import gas from the Middle East or get gas from other domestic suppliers.

From what I can remember, Shell imports from the Mid East.. BP, Sunoco and Hess do not.. I think Mobil imports gas too.

I find that Shell gas runs awesome on most of the cars I drove.. does anyone else think the same?

Regardless, I prefer Sunoco gas out of all the rest.

Well first things first from other forums I have been on I heard you get ****ty gas in cali anyway, so I guess you are used to it! Sucks to have emissions. But about a year ago Shell had a problem with their fuel screwing up eoples cars. Also the only 2x I used it on my Turbo car, I got check engine lights, and knock. I know this gus I had knock dectection on my UTEC!!! So my statements are founded. And this goes the same for my reasoning on using certain Motor Oils. I use only MObil 1 Synthetic, why??? Because if Corvette's and Porsche's come from the factory with it, they are good enough for my daily driver. So that is why I use Sunoco, they are a race fues Company. How many drag cars or Racecars use Shell V power????? Just my personal preference. I choose to use Higher quality products. I mean its OK to drive a Honda Civic, if you are going to mod it with quality parts like Skunk, DC, and Greddy, etc. But if you are goiing to put on an Arospeed Fart Can w/ APC stickers from Pep Boys, then you get what you deserve.....and thats to be laughed at, and beaten.....on a reguylar basis. I know I am rambling, but I do not cheap out when it comes to my car, she's my baby! Now I gotta go fill up with 89 Shell Gas!!!

Mobil, Exxon, or Citgo usually.

Shell is outrageously over priced here. The others want around 2.20 for 93, and Shell wants like 2.49 its nuts.

Ive tried sunoco, mobile 1, hess, bp, and shell. Sunoco and Mobile 1 are my favorites. I feel no difference between them, but since I read that Sunoco is a little tougher on the car, i choose Mobile 1. Besides, its closer to me anyway.

It depends on the region of the country for gas. In Cali, you can only get 91 with 10% alcohol. In Indiana, you can get 93 as the standard octane for premium. If you look at Maxima.org, our VQs have always been very sensitive to octane rating. I bet the 93 octane produces better results for the VQ than 91. 91 is a compromise that Cali residents have to put up with due to the strict environmental regulations here.

I agree that more octane doesn't necessarily mean its better for our engines (i.e. 100 octane gas) but I bet Nissan knows that different parts of the country use different octane ratings and have optimized for a wide range of potential gas used. Therefore, our VQs probably do very well with 93 octane gas.

i bet you barely notice the difference.
as long as its 91 or above, its ok

None of you guys seem to understand what an octane rating actually is. It has nothign to do with gas mileage, power, quality of the fuel. All it describes is how much the fuel can be compressed before it combusts on it's own. With high-compression engines (like the VQ), you need a higher octane fuel so that the fuel does not combust on it's own before the spark plug is supposed to ignites it. The minimum octane rating that each car manufacturer states is that octane rating required so that the engine runs properly. Granted that knock sensors can dial back the timing of the spark to prevent damage to the engine if you use a fuel of a lesser octane, the engine will not run as it is supposed to. If it's designed to run safely on 91 octane, tehre is absolutely no need to use anything more than 91 octane.

All gasoline producers get their gasoline from the exact same pipeline. The quality of the gas between different producers is in the additive packages that they include in their fuel. Shell's V-Power 93 octane fuel is essentually the same at Chevron's "Techron" premium except for the additives each comany uses within the gas. The additive package is what makeso ne fuel better than the other or makes one run better in a car than another. It has absolutely nothign to do with octane.

Well said msd3075. One other thing, octane requirements are relative to the elevation that you are driving. The higher in elevation the lower the octane requirement. If you live at 5000 above sea level premium gas might be only 89 octane which if fine for our G's at that altitude. If you drive out of the mountains to sea level on 89 octane you might have a problem.
